Initially, when the preliminary sketches for “Thunderbolts” were unveiled at Disney’s D23 Expo in September 2022, they showed a six-member team consisting of Yelena Belova, John Walker, Alexei Shostakov, Bucky Barnes, Ava Starr, and the controversial version of Taskmaster, Antonia Dreykov. However, as “Thunderbolts” approached its release in theaters, an intriguing pattern arose. The promo materials for the movie increasingly focused less on Taskmaster. This led fans to speculate that Antonia might not survive until the end of “Thunderbolts”. Indeed, during one of the film’s intense action scenes, Taskmaster was fatally shot by Ava after she spoke just a single line.
In a somewhat disappointing turn for fans, Olga Kurylenko’s character in the Thunderbolts scene of Black Widow didn’t have her full identity revealed. Her mask, featuring a skull theme, only retracted momentarily to allow Antonia to deliver her line before quickly returning to cover her face again. Furthermore, it seems that Marvel intentionally kept Kurylenko out of the spotlight in promotional materials such as posters, trailers, TV spots, and promo art for the movie. This deliberate choice was taken a step further when certain previews were edited to create an illusion of Taskmaster’s survival.
Despite being freed from her father’s control in 2021’s Black Widow, Antonia Dreykov, once merely a tool for her father’s Red Room, is now deceased within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her death serves as a warning to the team, particularly Yelena, that if they continue down their destructive path, they too may meet the same fate as Antonia.
Even though Taskmaster is no longer in the picture, she’s not disappearing – I’ve seen some intriguing concept art for the upcoming Thunderbolts team, straight from the sketchbook of character designer Constantine Sekeris! He shared a peek at the character on Instagram, giving us a glimpse into a time when they were still refining Antonia Dreykov’s appearance for the Thunderbolts. This collection even includes several unmasked portraits of Antonia herself. As a movie buff who can’t wait to see these characters come to life, I’m keeping my eyes peeled for more updates!
In the initial piece of the set, Taskmaster is depicted fully clad in her suit and armor, sans her usual hood or mask. Her face bears the gruesome scars, presumably from her days as a Red Room operative, which resemble twisted tree branches. Additionally, she seems to have suffered severe burns, another evident result of her line of work.
The next image is essentially the same as the first, just with some of the color scheme modified.
The third follows the same pattern, again with minor alterations in her uniform’s coloring.
In the fourth installment, Taskmaster dons his complete mask, which appears to be the definitive version shown on-screen during the Thunderbolts series.
In Sekeris’ post, there was a complete depiction of Taskmaster’s full costume as well. Attached to her back, you can spot the shield she wielded in the movie. Interestingly, Antonia’s shield seems to bounce off walls without being made of vibranium, similar to Captain America’s shield, though it almost certainly isn’t.
Later on, Sekeris’ post went over previous designs of Taskmaster’s suit. This new visualization appears to be more slender and aerodynamic, sporting a distinct mask that only partially conceals his face.
On the following slide, let’s take a more detailed examination of the similar layer. It might have been modified for the final movie to allow for retraction.
At last, they unveiled an sleek, all-black rendition of the costume that had me excited! It’s tailored to perfection for a covert operation under the cover of darkness.
Constantine Sekeris’ caption on his Instagram post can be seen below:
During my time at Marvel Visual Development, I worked on some Taskmaster ideas from Thunderbolts/New Avengers. In our department, we were responsible for generating numerous concepts – ranging from comic-book accurate to realistic, simple to complex, and everything in between. Our goal was to cater to a variety of looks as per the director’s and powers-that-be’s aesthetic preference… It was an exciting and demanding process to develop this character conceptually, and I had a fantastic time collaborating with the entire team on this project.
Could Taskmaster Return to the MCU in Some Form?
As a seasoned movie critic, I can’t help but acknowledge the swift and somewhat abridged journey of Taskmaster within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. First making her entrance as a formidable foe for Natasha Romanoff, portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, in Black Widow, she then appeared fleetingly in Thunderbolts* for barely five minutes. While the MCU’s Taskmaster shares some parallels with her comic book counterpart, they both possess the uncanny ability to mimic fighting styles through observation, don skull-shaped masks, and are equally adept at wielding an array of weapons.
In the world of Marvel Comics, unlike his counterpart in the MCU, Taskmaster is a character named Tony Masters who first appeared in The Avengers #195 in 1980, created by David Michelinie and George Pérez. Unlike being an operative for a secret government kill squad, Tony Masters is primarily a mercenary, frequently working for questionable organizations such as A.I.M. and the Cabal. Also similar to Spider-Man and Deadpool in the comic universe, Taskmaster’s dialogue often includes humor and witty remarks, which is a sharp difference from Antonia Dreykov only speaking a couple of times in the MCU.
As a passionate fan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), I’ve noticed some intriguing theories floating around about the potential return and evolution of the Taskmaster character. Specifically, there’s chatter that Tony Masters could inherit the mantle, transforming him into a legacy hero in future MCU installments.
Given the general disappointment among fans who are well-versed in the comics regarding the portrayal of Taskmaster within the MCU, this could be an avenue Marvel Studios might explore. Yet, for now, it seems that Taskmaster should remain a deceased character in live-action adaptations.
Interestingly, actor O-T Fagbenle initially tried out for the role of Taskmaster in Black Widow, but ended up being chosen to portray Nat’s friend and fence, Rick Mason instead. When the studio decided to take a different approach with the villain, it remains uncertain whether audiences would have found a stronger connection with a Taskmaster played by Fagbenle or if the character would have been significantly different from the one depicted in Black Widow and Thunderbolts*.
