The creator of Netflix’s Castlevania and Devil May Cry animated shows is now working on a new series following his acquisition of the rights to Duke Nukem.
Netflix is wholeheartedly adopting the world of video game intellectual properties, as evidenced by their production of numerous cartoon series derived from these games.
The streaming platform left viewers amazed by the releases of Cyberpunk Edgerunners, The Witcher, Arcane, Tomb Raider, and plans to debut Splinter Cell: Deathwatch towards the end of 2025.
It seems that another project is under development, this time with Duke Nukem as its focus. Adi Shankar, known for overseeing Netflix’s Devil May Cry and Castlevania series, has announced he’s secured the rights to Duke Nukem.

During an interview with Esquire, Shankar shared details about his upcoming projects, hinting at further development of DMC in the gaming world.
He stated that multiple IP addresses and businesses have been reaching out to him, expressing interest in working together. He owns the rights to the character, Duke Nukem.
As indicated by Shankar, though he didn’t acquire the gaming rights for Duke Nukem from Gearbox, there’s a possibility he might produce a film or television series instead.
As a devoted admirer, I can share that I’ve been brainstorming some concepts for everyone’s favorite ’90s FPS icon, Duke Nukem. It’s been quite some time since he’s been in the limelight, particularly after the rocky launch of Duke Nukem Forever back in 2011.
“It’s a middle finger to everybody,” Shankar said of his vision for his version of Duke Nukem.
When Duke Nukem exploded in popularity, many people tried to commercialize it, but it’s more like a symbol of defiance. A corporation can’t create Duke Nukem because the instant a corporation takes over, it ceases to be the authentic Duke Nukem. I have no intention of letting anyone dictate the direction of this project.
As a dedicated gamer, I’m curious about how this new development might influence the upcoming Duke Nukem movie from Legendary Entertainment. They secured the rights for movie production way back in 2022, so it’s intriguing to see where things are heading now.
In light of these points, Duke remains secondary for now as Shankar focuses on DMC Season 2 and aims to rule the Netflix competition with an iron fist.
I have ambitions, and my aim is to outshine Arcane in terms of viewership… Arcane is like setting money ablaze, and it’s fantastic, he remarked. With season 2 of Devil May Cry, I want to surpass that level of success. It’s like showing up to a tank battle with a water balloon and destroying the tank. That’s what I find cool.
