This Cancelled Dungeons & Dragons Game Looks Like It Could Have Been Special

By early 2023, Wizards of the Coast had scrapped at least five video games in production, one of which was an incomplete open-world action RPG based on Dungeons & Dragons by Hidden Path Entertainment. Recently, approximately eight minutes of gameplay footage from this project have surfaced online. Although the title wasn’t complete, the sneak peek reveals a strong potential.

The video showcasing game music was shared by one of the game’s music supervisors (originally from MP1st), who referred to it as Project Dante within the team. As such, it’s not surprising that this video emphasizes some of the game’s tunes. The video highlights that the score transitions smoothly from open-world melodies to more specific tracks, like a mystical theme for a temple and ominous notes leading up to a Troll cave. Interestingly, a group of minstrels performs an entire song while the main characters are present to hear it.

The world of Project Dante appears captivating, even in its early stages, yet it’s evident that the combat was still under development during the creation of this footage. While there’s enough to suggest the game had great potential, it unfortunately won’t be officially released. Some concept art for Project Dante has been posted on Imgur, offering a further peek at what might have become reality.

Recently, it was disclosed that Wizards of the Coast is working on a new solo D&D game with Giant Skull, a studio helmed by former Respawn team member Stig Asmussen. This summer, a revamped version of the classic D&D game Neverwinter Nights 2, dubbed the Enhanced Edition, will be released. Furthermore, Wizards of the Coast has hinted at multiple upcoming Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons video games in production.
