The chosen director for Marvel’s upcoming X-Men film has been announced, but according to X-Men ’97 creator Beau DeMayo, this selection is seen as an unimpressive or poor choice.
In the Disney Plus series, DeMayo served as the lead writer. However, before the show’s debut, he was let go. He claimed that Marvel took credit away from him for Season 2 following an incident where he shared X-Men fan art in a Gay Pride post on social media.
In August 2024, Marvel’s contract was terminated by the company following severe findings from an internal investigation, which included accusations of sexual misconduct that he has since denied. Meanwhile, Seasons 2 and 3 of X-Men ’97 have been given the go-ahead for production, with Matthew Chauncey stepping up as showrunner for Season 3.
Approximately a year on, we’ve seen some advancements regarding the X-Men within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As the Multiverse Saga nears its conclusion with Avengers: Secret Wars, it seems that the mutant group will take center stage next. A director has been appointed to breathe life into this team.
Beau DeMayo has “zero interest” in MCU’s X-Men movie after director announcement
It’s reported by Variety that Jake Schreier is now in charge of directing the upcoming Marvel X-Men film. Previously, he was responsible for helming ‘Thunderbolts’ and several episodes from Netflix’s series ‘Beef’.

Although Thunderbolts didn’t achieve commercial acclaim (earning $380 million globally, placing it among the less profitable MCU films), it garnered positive reviews from both critics and audiences.

However, DeMayo isn’t impressed with the choice – in his words, it’s “f**king pathetic.”
He commented on Twitter, “Wow, it’s only in the exclusive realm of @MarvelStudios, with its hints of old-fashioned plantation club atmosphere, that a good movie can be made which doesn’t recoup its costs and still lead to getting this job.
“Oh to fit a certain demographic in Hollywood and just fail upwards.
“I couldn’t care less about the ideas these two average individuals might present. It’s reassuring to know we’ll be receiving Bob Iger’s interpretation of X-Men, which unfortunately lacks genuine delving into the central themes of #xmen.
Previously, DeMayo has voiced his disapproval of the studio’s choices following his dismissal, and recently in April, he asserted that X-Men ’97 Season 2 was at a standstill after a disappointing preview, stating that Chauncey, director Jake Castorena, and Marvel were struggling to create a coherent series.
He wrote that, based on what I’ve heard, it appears their approach is not about putting on a great performance, but rather demonstrating they can accomplish it without my involvement, which he considered a creatively destructive philosophy.
