Initially, the year 2025 promised renewed excitement for new Star Trek series and the resurgence of one of its iconic shows. However, fans have been dealt another disappointing blow as Strange New Worlds is set to conclude with a brief Season 5. Although this is still some time away, I must confess that my optimism about getting the spinoff we’ve all eagerly anticipated has waned.

Ever since the announcement of “Strange New Worlds”, there has been much discussion about the possibility of “Star Trek” revisiting the concept of the original series, with Paul Wesley stepping into the role of Captain Kirk and taking over command of the “Enterprise” from Captain Pike. Wesley himself has shown interest in this idea, and given the success of “SNW”, it seemed like a spinoff was almost inevitable. However, I’m starting to have doubts about whether this will actually happen, due to several reasons that are largely beyond the franchise’s control.

Akiva Goldsman’s Comments Seem To Paint A Better Picture For Why The Final Season Is Abbreviated

Initially, when I discovered that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds would conclude after Season 5, it didn’t come as a shock. Alex Kurtzman had shared with TopMob that when Discovery was cancelled at the same milestone, the era of one hundred-episode Trek series had ended. Achieving five seasons is considered an extraordinary triumph by streaming service standards. In fact, I had anticipated that we wouldn’t exceed five seasons for Strange New Worlds.

I must confess, I wasn’t anticipating the surprise that “SNW” Season 5 would only span six episodes. This revelation set off my suspicions that this wasn’t the usual renewal we’ve grown accustomed to. During the Tribeca Film Festival, co-showrunner Akiva Goldsman shared some insights with Slashfilm about this unusual decision to wrap up with Season 5. Originally, we had planned for a five-year journey. However, it’s important to remember our stay is not perpetual. The ones deciding how long we can stay are those who support us financially. Consequently, they provided us with a shorter fifth season soon after granting us a fourth one. Secrets don’t last long in this world.

Akiva Goldsman tactfully hinted that Paramount+ executives, who hold the financial reins, were responsible for cancelling Strange New Worlds. Given my past recollections of discussions about the showrunners, this doesn’t surprise me much since seasons on this show don’t necessarily correspond with a year in the storyline. Consequently, viewers can’t assume that one season equates to a single year within the series.

In my opinion, since Season 4 was already being made, it seems there wasn’t enough time for Paramount+ to announce the series finale. Instead of leaving fans in suspense, they decided to add another half season to tie up loose ends and conclude the storyline. This ensures that one of the most popular Star Trek shows on Paramount+ has a fitting conclusion before continuing without an ending.

The alternative they presented is superior to what Discovery received, but it still appears that the person analyzing the data believed SNW didn’t have enough success to justify more seasons. If this assessment is correct, it’s tough to imagine a spinoff would be particularly captivating.

Paramount Hasn’t Expressed Much Interest In Continuing Any Trek Series Thus Far

Regarding streaming versions of Star Trek, there appears to be little enthusiasm for creating sequels based on previously aired shows. The absence of a successor series for Picard, despite the incredible acclaim and viewership that Season 3 garnered by reuniting the cast from The Next Generation, seems to confirm this trend. Although the series finale left room for a new show, all we’ve been told is that Paramount has proposed concepts which actresses like Jeri Ryan declined because she felt it wasn’t in line with what fans were expecting.

While fans may not be privy to the complete reasoning behind the delay of the Picard spinoff, it appeared for quite some time that members of the cast and crew were eager and ready to bring it to life. However, despite this enthusiasm, there’s no concrete proof indicating a spinoff is underway, leaving us wondering if we should be overly hopeful about Strange New Worlds receiving a sequel.

It occurred to me only now that I should have pondered this question earlier, and it was merely the decrease in episodes for the final season that jolted me into realizing it. Fans of Star Trek may dream about Paul Wesley taking on the role of “Captain” Kirk and embarking on new journeys with the original series’ bridge crew, but based on Paramount+’s past decisions regarding the Trek franchise, it seems highly unlikely that a spinoff will materialize.

A New Series Could Be Costly, At A Time Where Paramount Is Reporting Financial Struggles

According to numerous sources in the entertainment industry, Paramount is currently experiencing financial difficulties. The Los Angeles Times has reported that the studio recently dismissed 3.5% of its domestic workforce, following layoffs from the previous year. At present, Paramount is waiting for regulatory approval for its merger with Skydance and is embroiled in a $20 billion lawsuit filed by former President Donald Trump over a 60 Minutes interview with Vice President Kamala Harris.

Actress Christina Chong from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds shares that there was one episode she initially felt let down by, saying, “It was something entirely new and different.

It seems reasonable to surmise that Paramount might be considering more ways to expand Star Trek, with the aim of attracting fresh subscribers and revenue. However, a spinoff based on Strange New Worlds may not be their immediate priority. The main reason is that if the series were to proceed, it would require keeping key cast members such as Paul Wesley, Ethan Peck, Celia Rose Gooding, Babs Olusanmokun, Martin Quinn, and others who are set to play characters from the original Star Trek series. Since fans anticipate these actors reprising their roles from previous series, they would hold some bargaining power during contract negotiations. This could potentially make the production of such a series quite expensive.

In essence, Akiva Goldsman’s statement implies that the fate of shows like Star Trek: Strange New Worlds lies with those who fund their production. It’s plausible to think that a higher-up has analyzed the financial aspects and concluded it was more advantageous to conclude the series, despite its positive critical reception and consistent viewership on streaming platforms.
