A truck driver on the way to deliver 2,800 Switch 2 consoles to GameStop pulled over for a quick break – only to find the $1.4 million shipment had vanished

Approximately 2,800 potential Nintendo Switch 2 units, valued at approximately $1.4 million, were stolen from a truck traveling from Redmond, WA to Grapevine, TX. This incident seems reminiscent of a thrilling heist scene in a movie, but the thieves might not have anticipated that Nintendo has the capability to render the stolen devices inoperable, effectively rendering them worthless.

$1.4 million heist of Switch 2 consoles may backfire spectacularly

During a break on June 8, 2025, in Bennett, Colorado, a truck driver discovered that thieves had stolen approximately 2,810 Nintendo Switch 2 consoles from his truck. The exact time and location of the theft during the journey from Washington to Texas remain unknown, as investigators continue their search for answers.

However, if these thieves attempt to sell the stolen Switch 2 consoles, they could face an unexpected problem. Since Nintendo has the ability to render them inoperable with a remote update, essentially turning them into worthless pieces of plastic, similar to those destroyed at GameStop in LA. Furthermore, no one has successfully bypassed the new system’s security measures as Nintendo has significantly increased it compared to previous versions. While someone did execute a ROP exploit, it’s not yet close to achieving a full jailbreak. Consequently, cashing in the $1.4 million worth of stolen Switch 2 consoles might prove challenging.

By June 19, 2025, it appears that none of the stolen consoles have resurfaced in used markets. Given this, it’s likely they’ll either be sold online or secretly exported from the U.S. to avoid detection. Each console carries a distinct serial number, which both Nintendo and law enforcement can track. When someone registers the device (a prerequisite for playing games or receiving updates) on their system, Nintendo can pinpoint its location. The only way to evade capture is by remaining offline indefinitely, but that rather negates the whole idea behind owning a console.
