Ryan Reynold’s Dragon’s Lair Movie May Finally Have A Director

In the year 2020, Ryan Reynolds was chosen to star in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the 1983 arcade game, Dragon’s Lair. Although progress on this project has been slow over the past five years, there’s now renewed interest as a director is being considered, potentially signaling that things might be getting underway again.

According to The InSneider and The Hollywood Reporter, discussions are ongoing for James Bobin to take up directing duties on Dragon’s Lair, though no agreement has been reached as of yet. Notably, Bobin previously directed Disney’s successful reboot of The Muppets in 2011, followed by its sequel, Muppets Most Wanted. Additionally, he has worked on projects like Dora and the Lost City of Gold, episodes for Flight of the Conchords, The Mysterious Benedict Society, and Percy Jackson and the Olympians.

Don Bluth, a renowned figure in animation, teamed up with Gary Goldman, Jon Pomeroy, and Rick Dyer back in 1983 to create Dragon’s Lair. This game was groundbreaking for its era, offering players an immersive experience where they took on the role of Dirk the Daring, a mostly mute knight on a mission to rescue Princess Daphne from Singe, a fearsome dragon. The castle housing the princess was packed with hazards and foes, and making the wrong move often resulted in gruesome demises for poor Dirk.

Back in the day, when I was just starting out as a gamer, the original Dragon’s Lair burst onto the scene, giving rise to an ephemeral animated series. Fast forward a few years, and Dragon’s Lair 2: Time Warp made its grand entrance into arcades in ’91. These classic Dragon’s Lair games, along with Space Ace, another of Bluth’s successful animated arcade ventures, have been reborn multiple times for consoles and computers.

In 2015, Bluth and Goldman successfully crowd-funded a demo for an animated Dragon’s Lair movie, but it wasn’t selected for production. Now, Bluth, Goldman, Pomeroy, and Reynolds are working together as producers on the live-action version of the film, with Reynolds still eager to portray Dirk the Daring.

There’s no announced release date yet for Dragon’s Lair, and no actors have been chosen so far. However, with a director on board, things could shift quickly.
