Everything you need to know about Raidou Remastered on Switch & Switch 2 covering performance, saves, and DLC

Raidou Remastered: The Enigma of the Soul-less Troops, finds itself in a distinct situation as it is among the pioneer cross-platform games debuting during the Nintendo Switch 2’s launch window. Sega has taken a contentious step by offering the Switch 2 edition as a Game Key Card, while the original game’s physical release remains a standard Switch cartridge. This decision has left many players in a quandary, wondering if they should opt for playing the Switch version of the game through backwards compatibility instead. Here is all the essential information you need to make a confident purchase decision.

Mikhail has penned an extensive review that compares all portable iterations of a game, which might spark your curiosity if you’re keen on learning more. The main emphasis of this article lies in the experience of playing both versions on the Nintendo Switch 2, as well as providing essential information about DLC, save transfer options, and other relevant details.

Can you upgrade to the Switch 2 version of Raidou Remastered if you buy the Switch version?

Unfortunately, I’m unable to help you upgrade to the Raidou Remastered Switch 2 edition. At present, neither version offers an upgrade path as they are both priced at $50 each. Making a decision between them can be challenging since some people might prefer the enhanced capabilities of the Switch 2 hardware, but the original Switch version is the only one that’s compatible with your current system due to backwards compatibility. However, keep in mind that the Switch 1 version may have visual limitations when compared to the more powerful Switch 2 hardware.

Do you need to buy the Raidou Remastered DLC again on Nintendo Switch 2?

As a gamer, I’ve found out that, just like the base game, the Raidou Remastered DLC is console-exclusive. That means, if I wish to enjoy this DLC on both my consoles, I’ll need to make two separate purchases.

Does Raidou Remastered on Switch 2 have any save transfer with the Switch version?

In other words, you can’t move your saved progress from Raidou Remastered on one Nintendo Switch version to another, since they’re treated as separate games due to differences between the original and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

What are the differences between Raidou Remastered on Switch and Switch 2?

Version 1:
Both games strive for a resolution of 1080p at 60 frames per second when connected to their respective docks, with the original Switch aiming for 720p and the upcoming Switch 2 managing 1080p in handheld mode. However, from our testing, we’ve found that the Switch version has difficulty meeting these resolution goals or providing adequate anti-aliasing. On the other hand, following recent updates, the file size of the Switch version is now 12 GB, whereas the updated Switch 2 edition is slightly larger at 12.7 GB.

Version 2:
The target resolutions for both games are 1080p and 60 FPS when connected to their docks, but the original Switch only manages 720p in handheld mode and the new Switch 2 offers 1080p. Our testing has shown that the Switch version struggles with maintaining these resolutions or implementing proper anti-aliasing. As for file size, after recent updates, the Switch version weighs in at 12 GB, while the updated Switch 2 version is slightly larger at 12.7 GB.

Raidou Remastered on Switch

On the first version of Switch, the frame rate was unstable and not locked, running smoothly only occasionally on its original hardware. However, with the enhanced power of the second Switch model, it consistently achieves 60 FPS, except for a few stutters that may occur in certain areas. Compared to playing it on the original Switch, your gaming experience will be significantly smoother most of the time. Unfortunately, when played through backwards compatibility, we didn’t observe any resolution enhancements. The shadow resolution and texture quality are visibly lower compared to other versions, which is more noticeable when displayed on the larger screen of the second Switch. In fact, the visuals seem somewhat smudgy, particularly when playing in handheld mode where it can appear as low as 720p at times. The primary advantage here lies in the improved frame rate, but you should still be prepared for occasional stuttering during outdoor gameplay.

Raidou Remastered on Switch 2

From our perspective, we believe that the native Switch 2 edition of Raidou Remastered could be the most outstanding portable version of this game available. Compared to the original Switch version, the Switch 2 version appears more polished across all aspects. While it may not have necessarily targeted a higher resolution, achieving a steady 60 FPS was undeniably a wise decision. Textures are noticeably sharper, and shadows appear clear whether docked or undocked.

Given that there have been some stability issues with the Steam Deck version (a device with an 800p screen) in certain areas, it’s truly remarkable that this game offers a portable version capable of maintaining 60 FPS and surpassing the performance of the standard Switch edition. There are occasional stutters, but they are less pronounced compared to other portable devices, with the exception of the ROG Ally.

Which version of Raidou Remastered should you buy?

In essence, your decision hinges on whether you consider the enhancements in the native Switch 2 edition outweigh the inconvenience of not having a physical copy. While the native Switch 2 version offers a superior gaming experience, playing it through backward compatibility is still an option to consider. The visuals might not be as striking, but the benefit of smoother frame rate due to backward compatibility should not be overlooked.

If digital ownership suits you, if you anticipate sales on the eShop in the future, or if key cards don’t bother you, the Switch 2 version is an excellent choice. However, if game key cards are a deal breaker and you prefer physical copies, the original Switch version will serve you just as well.
