I Don’t Always Love How AGT Judges Use Their Golden Buzzers, But Terry Crews Beating Simon Cowell To The Punch Was Perfect

The 20th season of “America’s Got Talent,” airing in the 2025 TV lineup, has already used the golden buzzer four times, adding excitement to each episode. However, I sometimes find the manner in which judges distribute these golden buzzers a bit questionable. In the latest episode, host Terry Crews surprised the panel consisting of Howie Mandel, Mel B, Sofia Vergara, and Simon Cowell by advancing an enjoyable act directly to the live shows, and I appreciated this move, not just because of the choice he made but also because he outsmarted Simon.

As a die-hard fan, it was evident even before The Funkateers graced the stage that Terry Crews had developed a soft spot for them after their backstage encounter. These four lifelong buddies, originally from Detroit, have a special connection with Michigan native, Crews, who frequently showcases his affection towards performers from his home state. You might recall when he pushed the golden buzzer for the Detroit Youth Choir during Season 14. However, being a fellow Michigander doesn’t automatically guarantee success, and I wasn’t certain if the judges would advance The Funkateers despite their electrifying performance that had the audience cheering.

As a film enthusiast, I found myself thoroughly enjoying their performance so much that I couldn’t help but imagine how I would use the golden buzzer in a heartbeat. You see, I’ve always felt that my choice for the golden buzzer wouldn’t align with what the judges typically do. They usually press the buzzer for acts who would likely advance regardless, after impressing everyone on the panel. But I believe it would be more exciting if the judges pressed the buzzer for a personal favorite, someone whose future on America’s Got Talent might not have been guaranteed without this special recognition.

Given the judges have set high standards for dance acts, and Mel B has shown a critical eye since rejoining AGT this season, I had doubts The Funkateers would progress further towards the $1 million prize and Las Vegas show. In my opinion, they required the golden buzzer to secure their future in the competition. Have a look and understand why I was hoping these four men could realize their 45-year dream!

Indeed, it appears my concerns about The Funkateers receiving overly critical judgement were unfounded. Sofia Vergara, Simon Cowell, and Howie Mandel all praised their performance as “perfect,” with Mandel adding that performing at a later stage in life made it even more impressive. Mel B couldn’t hide her enthusiasm, sporting a huge smile. However, Terry Crews decided to press the golden buzzer, which I found delightful. Not only did he surprise the judges by appearing behind them to trigger the gold confetti, but he also managed to beat Simon to the buzzer. What’s not to adore?

Wow, look how much progress the show has made since it was on the brink of extinction in its early days! I must admit, The Funkateers have been my top pick for favorite golden buzzer winners from Season 20. I can’t wait to see them back on stage again! As exciting as that is, competition during the live shows will be fierce, and there are still a few more golden buzzers left to discover. Don’t forget to catch the newest episodes of America’s Got Talent Season 20 every Tuesday at 8 p.m. ET, before we dive into Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s new series, Destination X, which might be a bit puzzling initially. Stay tuned!
