The Onimusha series was born in a gaming era quite distinct from today, well before open-world games and souls-like titles became popular. Next year, we’re returning to this franchise with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, but rest assured, the team led by Satoru Nihei isn’t planning to follow contemporary trends in this new installment.
According to Nihei, Onimusha: Way of The Sword isn’t a game that takes place in an open world, nor is it a challenging game where you die and have to start over (similar to souls-like games). Although experienced action game players may enjoy it, the intention was to create a game that even those who don’t typically play action games would find enjoyable. In Onimusha: Way of The Sword, the main emphasis is on capturing the feeling of sword clashes through the action itself.
In his discussion, Nihel revealed that the updated version of Way of the Sword introduces fresh mechanics for a more authentic sword fighting experience. The defensive move known as “Deflecting” enables players to drain the stamina from bosses. Once the stamina is depleted sufficiently, it triggers a Break Issen attack, enabling characters to inflict damage on the boss and destroy specific parts of it. Furthermore, Nihel assured us that the soul-absorption ability will continue to be a feature in the upcoming game.
Akihito Kadowaki, the producer, shared with TopMob that “Way of the Sword” stands independently from all previous Onimusha games. In this new installment, players will take on the role of Miyamoto Mushashi, a samurai character modeled after the late actor Toshiro Mifune.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will hit PS5, Xbox Series X❘S, and PC in 2026.
