Love Island Recap: Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda, Huda

You may already be aware that Love Island broadcasts new episodes from Monday to Sunday, with Wednesdays being an exception. On Wednesdays, we’ll be providing you with our weekly recaps for the remainder of the season.

I’ll put it plainly. Having two recouplings in three days feels excessive. If you intend to create a major shakeup in the villa, give it some time before unveiling another big surprise. Allow the Islanders to handle their own drama, if you will.

It seems I might be on my own in this. This week has taught me that my views aren’t as popular as others’. For instance, Huda and Jeremiah haven’t particularly grabbed my attention like they have for some. Ace, on the other hand, appears to be more invested. When Austin, that overzealous Backstreet Boy, voiced his agreement with Ace from afar, exclaiming “Look, he’s so passionate about it!”, I found myself nodding in agreement. However, I still believe Ace’s enthusiasm for them was a bit excessive, and we should all perhaps tone down the use of the term “love bombing.” Yet, when Ace accused Jeremiah of scamming, there was some truth to his claim.

Previously, their relationship between Huda and Jeremiah continued as usual. One moment they were arguing, and the next, a night-vision scene unfolded of them making love under the covers. Admittedly, it can become monotonous at times, but who among us hasn’t found solace in those late-night chats with a friend going through their seventh breakup attempt with a toxic partner this year? Moreover, it sets the stage for one of the most memorable conversations on Love Island, when Huda decides to share her secret about having a child with Nic. The conversation is so poignant that I’ve chosen to include its entirety here:

Huda: “I’m a mommy.”

Nic: “Mommy?”

Huda: “I’m a mom.”

Nic: “Mamacita!”

Huda: “No, I’m a mommy.”

Nic: “A mom of what? Like a dog?”

Huda: “I have a daughter.”

Nic: “Like in real life?”

Huda: “Yeah.”

Nic: “Like a daughter, like a real baby?”

Huda: “Yeah, like a human child.”

Nic: *Grins in confusion.

And scene.

Huda passes on the topic of her emotional support for Jeremiah to Nic, as she believes it’s essential for him to have someone to confide in regarding his feelings. This suggests they’ve had discussions about Jeremiah’s emotional needs, even though these conversations are not shown. Instead, we witness two episodes centered around an undercooked pancake, leading to disagreements between Huda and Jeremiah. Huda insists that making breakfast is a basic responsibility, while Jeremiah feels she’s constantly criticizing him, believing nothing he does will ever satisfy her. Taylor seems to be part of the situation somehow. Eventually, Huda expresses frustration, stating it’s not about the pancakes, but rather what they symbolize. Jeremiah responds vaguely with “Okay, Mom,” implying he views this entire situation as unnecessary drama over pancakes.

After the never-ending pancake drama, it’s hard not to sense a lingering tension between Jeremiah and Huda that feels more like secret animosity. Then, with the sun rising over the villa, it hits me – this has been going on for quite some time. Everything appears peaceful in Whoville, but I can’t help thinking that their relationship will reach its breaking point during Casa Amor, just as fate seems to have planned. However, once America gets involved and starts voting, things could easily turn chaotic again.

In the interim, it’s worth noting that there are more Islanders residing within the villa. After the incident with the pie, 12 attractive singles find themselves in a shared white bedroom (with one exception: Ace who was sleeping outside). By the end of the night, the number of Islanders increases to 15 as three new contestants, Pepe, Jalen, and Iris, enter the villa. As is customary, these new entrants, Pepe, Jalen, and Iris, arrived after a competition. In this case, Love Island opted for a straightforward kink theme for the challenge. There’s plenty of kissing going on, but what stands out to me is that Amaya is so caught up in praising Iris that she forgets Iris could potentially be a rival.

When it comes to Amaya, there’s a lot to admire – but let’s save the praise for another time as I don’t want to risk any harsh words. Lately, I find myself deeply protective of Amaya. You see, she’s not just here seeking romance; she’s also on a mission to make friends. And when I say ‘friend’, I mean someone who would go above and beyond for you – like testifying in court if needed! Imagine her boyfriend tells her that your boyfriend is unfaithful, but she can’t reveal this secret to anyone. Well, Amaya would already be sending you a text before the conversation was even over, because she values trust and loyalty that deeply. I can vouch for this, as I’ve seen it in action with Charlie.

It appears I may have spoken prematurely last week, Charlie. Just one captivating, tattooed woman of Spanish descent has managed to complicate the situation – a term you might be familiar with, Charlie, is ‘adding fuel to the fire’. Hannah had previously hinted at having commitment issues, but unfortunately, Charlie wasn’t privy to that conversation, so he was taken aback when Hannah was seen kissing Pepe passionately.

As a movie critic, I find myself intrigued by the unfolding drama in Love Island. From my perspective, it appears that Hannah harbors feelings for Charlie, as she confesses. Yet, Hannah’s heart seems to be drawn towards passionate encounters with charming men – an integral part of this reality show, isn’t it? Let’s call it her speakeasy or make-out room.

In the vicinity of the photo booth where Nic and Cierra sealed their connection, cowgirl style, Hannah finds herself astride Pepe’s muscular thighs, engaging in a passionate kiss of her own. Meanwhile, Hannah is off exploring this new flirtation, a forlorn Charlie comes to terms with his lack of companionship and casts hopeful glances around the villa, seeking a potential partner. Alas, Amaya, the only available girl, remains steadfastly loyal, moved nearly to tears by the situation.

However, Hannah has already made up her mind: she will cease kissing anyone but Charlie – just in time for America to intervene and potentially tear them apart forever.

Indeed, it’s time for the firepit! Today, Ariana, with a flourish of her ponytail, reveals that America has decided who the three bombshells will pair up with. As we all know, when America votes, things can get pretty wild and unpredictable – in other words, expect some chaos!

Initially, it’s clear that Taylor hasn’t been delivering for about two weeks now, and Olandria seems to be in need of another option. Enter Jalen, a young man from a small Georgia town embarking on his first international adventure. It’s refreshing to see Taylor show some signs of stress, providing a brief break from the usual. Despite being only 22, Ace appears to have a knack for romance and suggests that Taylor should express affection towards women, which he has already arranged for Taylor. This is how we find Taylor and Olandria on a salsa dance “date,” instructed by Ace himself, who happens to be a professional dance teacher.

Ace has changed the time of his “yoga-class date” with Chelley to an earlier hour the next day. In a manner typical of him, he communicates the fun she’ll have by firmly instructing her to be prepared on time, accompanied by a hint of teasing or criticism. He tells her, “I know you’re usually late, and I don’t tolerate that.” Yet, Chelley is thrilled by this interaction with Ace.

Despite Ace’s guidance, Taylor hasn’t been successful in securing Olandria’s affections so far, and this becomes more challenging now that she has alternative choices. Predictably, the public chooses Jalen to pair up with Olandria, leaving Taylor without a partner and at risk of being eliminated.

Next up is Pepe, and it’s more of a statement than a question. Pepe has had some engaging conversations with Cierra, who he says is his type, and has even given Amaya cause for optimism – “Wow, Amaya might just be smitten by guacamole!” However, things don’t go as planned. Pepe has been flirting heavily with Hannah all over the villa, which leads America to choose her during the recoupling. This puts Charlie back in a difficult position again.

As a passionate film aficionado, let me share my take on the unfolding events:

Afterward, the stage was set for a gripping tale. Among the lads, it seemed everyone, save perhaps Taylor, harbored feelings towards Iris. Nic was eager to whip out his abacus once more, even Jeremiah had shown a touch of courtesy, but Ace was making notable progress. Upon her arrival in the villa, he assumed the Ace’s Charm Offensive Position (leaning on a pillow, crossed arms, an air of anticipation) and shared that he sought love while keeping all possibilities open as a matter of principle. Iris herself considered it one of the most profound conversations she’d had in the villa.

However, a logical pairing between Iris and Ace appeared unlikely. America opted to couple Iris with Jeremiah, which led to an instant mess. “Dude, this is just messed up,” remarked Olandria. Now, Ariana announced that the Islanders had to select one of the three singles for elimination, leaving me on edge as Charlie vocalized his support while Amaya cried out, “No! We don’t want to do that!

Cierra casts her vote for Charlie. Chelley does the same. Austin, feeling anxious, chooses Taylor. Nic votes for Huda, expressing that everyone should experiment with new options, and she hasn’t. Then, Ace delivers a highly critical speech against Huda, calling her relationship “phony,” which results in him casting his vote for Huda. The final decision falls upon Amaya, who is visibly affected but ultimately chooses Charlie. At this point, everyone becomes emotional. The boys are upset with Austin for not supporting Huda. Jeremiah expresses anger towards the boys for trying to dictate his dating choices. Huda feels let down by the public. Meanwhile, Hannah weeps over a picture of her and Charlie.

We can’t waste too much time grieving. It’s necessary for the sexy singles to share kisses and swap beds. Unsatisfactory breakfasts should be served. Huda finds herself fuming over Jeremiah’s indifference, while Ace presides from his spot above the ping-pong table. The following day, the newly formed couples are whisked away for a triple date, leaving Huda with several hours to fine-tune her “Let It Burn” speech.

Following the drama of the previous night’s recoupling, Jeremiah was so consumed by anger towards his friends that he neglected to console Huda, an oversight which is truly unforgivable. In fact, even Nic, Jeremiah’s closest friend and Huda’s main adversary, expressed his disappointment and claimed Jeremiah had lost his respect. The situation is so grave that Jeremiah’s only explanation is, “In my mind at the time, I didn’t want to.” Now, Jeremiah finds himself puzzled because he believed all his friends wanted him to end things with Huda, yet they are now criticizing him for being harsh towards her. It seems Jeremiah is left wondering what more he must do to demonstrate his loyalty to his friends.

It’s unfortunate that Huda seems to be part of this heated discussion, and even more so that she continues to verbally attack Jeremiah throughout the day. Her friends subtly suggest she behave in a more refined manner, but that doesn’t seem to fit her personality. Instead of directly insulting Jeremiah, she often vents her frustration to other Islanders or breaks down in tears. It’s quite intense and hard to watch. I understand the villa time might feel prolonged, but it seems Huda is reacting as if this relationship has lasted for much longer than just ten days. This behavior is becoming tiresome for the other Islanders, and Iris wants to know why it’s all so intense. Ma’am, please remember that you are on Love Island.

A heartfelt conversation between Jeremiah and Huda is imminent, happening in what’s colloquially known as a secret hideout or covert bar. Over an extended stretch of time, it could have been hours or days, Huda passionately expresses her thoughts forcefully, while Jeremiah frequently clears his throat. He begins by apologizing for leaving her the previous night, an apology that might as well be from Nic, considering he’s the one this apology is truly meant for. Huda responds with “I needed you and you weren’t there,” but Jeremiah clarifies that he wasn’t present for her because he was shut down, and he became shut down due to freezing up, and he froze up because he had checked out, and he checked out because he shut down. Frankly, I wish I were somewhere else at this moment.

Instead of discussing other pairs, it’s Jeremiah and Huda who dominate the show with their intense drama, much like the villa’s atmosphere or the room’s air can’t be ignored. Occasionally, we catch glimpses of what’s going on elsewhere. Hannah is finding comfort in her secondary position. Austin has ceased his pursuit of Chelley and is now investing his attention into Amaya. Ace has chosen Chelley for the first time. Meanwhile, Olandria appears to have grown closer to Taylor following her interaction with Jalen. When it comes to the next recoupling, made even more dramatic by an intricate door symbolism, only one unexpected twist remains.

Throughout the entire day, Jeremiah has repeatedly expressed to Huda that he continues to feel affection towards her while also stating that Iris doesn’t appeal to him romantically. He further conveyed to the group of boys that the situation with Huda is beyond repair. Despite everyone being puzzled about whom he would ultimately choose, they were all left speechless when Jeremiah selected Iris instead. With a sense of pride, Huda stepped out from her own purple door, accompanied by an uplifting tune. Addressing Jeremiah, she accused him of deceit and then choosing the “safe option,” referring to Iris. “Well done, buddy. You’re a jerk.

Let’s hold off on going to bed for now. We need to make a decision about one more person, either Huda or Jalen. An intriguing scene unfolds as the Islanders line up behind their chosen ones. Interestingly, Nic, Austin, Jeremiah, and Pepe are backing Jalen, while everyone else is supporting Huda, even Iris and Ace! Yes, Ace, who typically acts petty towards Huda, but he’s still doing it. It seems like he might be standing with Chelley, or following some Islander loyalty rule, or perhaps he dislikes Jeremiah more than Huda. With Ace, it’s always hard to tell the exact reason.

Can I Pull You for a Chat?

• “It’s fun to kiss your friends.” — Austin

• “I just love watching people make out.” — Iris

• “God bless America.” — Huda

• “Huda put security alarms around the bed in case he moves.” — Nic

• “Do you believe in evolution?” — Cierra

• “I bet Austin’s ass still up waiting for me.” — Chelley
