The price for Borderlands 4 has been officially disclosed, and it’s not set at $80. Instead, its standard version will retail for $70, which represents a $10 increase compared to the initial cost of Borderlands 3. This price hike seems to have pleased Randy Pitchford, the head of Gearbox Software, as he expressed his excitement on social media over the fact that publisher 2K chose not to raise the price up to $80.
As a dedicated fan, I’ve heard some speculations suggesting that Borderlands 4 might mirror Mario Kart World’s price point at $80. Interestingly, Microsoft seems to be following suit with their upcoming titles, starting with The Outer Worlds 2 this year, but here’s the twist: not all games from 2K are going to cost the same. In contrast to this trend, Mafia: The Old Country will be priced at a more affordable $50 upon its launch.
Pitchford stated his enthusiasm over the fact that “we won’t be involving any paid early access” and that the team has decided to bring the game’s launch forward to September 12. While many contemporary games offer early unlocks for those who pay more, this isn’t the case with Borderlands 4. Regarding its release date, Borderlands 4 was initially scheduled to premiere on September 23 but has been brought forward a few weeks instead.
Additionally, Pitchford mentioned his satisfaction with Gearbox’s post-release plans, which include downloadable content packs beyond the launch, some of which will introduce new Vault Hunters at an additional cost.
In contrast, whereas the standard edition of Borderlands 4 retails at $70, Gearbox has created higher-tier editions priced at $100, $130, and $150. These premium versions come with additional in-game items for those willing to pay a bit more. For further details, don’t forget to explore TopMob’s Borderlands 4 preorder guide.
In comparison to Borderlands 3, Borderlands 4 had a development budget that was more than twice as large. As previously stated, the base version of Borderlands 4 is priced $10 higher than its predecessor at launch in 2019. Considering the income from premium editions and DLC sales for Borderlands 4, it’s possible that the game’s starting price could exceed $70. However, the exact figures may never be disclosed to the public.
To this day, the Borderlands series has racked up almost 93 million unit sales, and Borderlands 3 holds the record as 2K’s fastest-ever selling game. It has moved over 22 million copies, but the top spot in terms of sales within the franchise still belongs to Borderlands 2 with more than 30 million units sold.
In simple terms, Borderlands 4 will be released on September 12th for computers (PC), PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S consoles. A release date for the game on the Nintendo Switch 2 has been planned but not yet specified.
