Get ready, “North American Scum” pals, as the pirates are making a comeback! And yes, they’re called “The Buccaneers” too. With season one’s cliffhanger fresh in everyone’s mind, these spirited American women continue to dominate London high society amidst an intriguing whirlwind of drama. Much of it arises from their knack for finding themselves in the midst of turmoil – crisis being their default state. However, most of the drama stems from the fact that season two immediately follows where the finale ended, which, if you remember, was all about the Duke and Duchess of Tintagel’s (Theo and Nan) much-anticipated wedding!
From my perspective, you might be wondering why things are getting so intense. Allow me to explain the whirlwind of events that unfolded. The evening before the wedding, my dear friend Guy, who is not as wealthy as others (in comparison), confided in me at my window, professing a deep, unyielding love for me – despite the fact I was supposed to marry his friend, Theo, the Duke. We gave in to our passions and spent an extraordinary night together. However, I had planned to call off the wedding. But then, my sister Jinny shared her plight: her abusive husband, Lord Seadown, has been tormenting her, she’s pregnant, and she doesn’t know how to proceed. Eventually, I made a deal with the Dowager Duchess of Tintagel, who saw us together. In this arrangement, I would marry Theo to preserve the Tintagel name, and in return, the Dowager would help Jinny escape and protect her. To execute this plan, she sent Jinny away with Guy as an escort. We swore to keep the terms of this deal a secret from Theo. And amazingly, it worked! Jinny and Guy fled the scene while “Long Live” by Taylor Swift played (quite fitting for the series), and I went ahead and married Theo. To add more complications, my parents learned that my biological mother has returned to stir things up, and Richard discovered that his father is dying, so instead of escaping to America, he and Conchita must stay in London and address their family’s financial issues. So, as you can see, there are quite a few moving parts!
Initially, one might assume that Nan would feel relieved when her plan succeeded, but this sense of relief is fleeting, lasting only about thirty seconds. Instead, she experiences panic attacks in the woods. Nan despises deceiving Theo, who looks so joyful, and she also harbors deep affection for Guy. She feels compelled to give her husband the most atrocious wedding gift possible and confess her secret. It’s the Dowager who locates Nan in the woods and delivers a harsh lecture, essentially saying: submit or face consequences. However, Nan rejects this advice and asserts that she will make her own choices, though she acknowledges that a woman in her position has very limited good choices.
After receiving another pep talk, this time from an unexpected figure – her biological mother, Nan’s mom indeed arrived at Tintagel! And who would have thought, it was Leighton Meester! More significantly, It seems, she is Patti’s younger sister, Nell. If you feel the urge to gasp, please do so. Their early interactions were tense. Both parties held grudges: Patti still harbored resentment over Nell sleeping with her husband and daring to disrupt their lives. Nell felt resentful that Patti blamed everything on her when Tracy played a big role in it. Patti’s “he’s a man, I expected it from him” didn’t help matters! It infuriates Nell even more when she learns that Patti is finally divorcing Tracy after all these years. Why couldn’t she have defended Nell at the time? After all, she was around the same age as Nan is now. If Patti thinks Nan is “still a child” who needs protection, why didn’t she extend that sentiment to her own sister back then? Truth be told, everyone should probably feel about thirty percent angrier towards Tracy. That man deserves some serious criticism!
In a significantly more peaceful dialogue than before, Nell talks with Nan, who remains unaware of Nell’s true identity. Believing that Nell is her long-lost aunt, Nan pours out her feelings about her current predicament to Nell. She expresses her belief that marrying Theo was the worst decision she ever made. Despite having the opportunity to stir up trouble, Nell opts for kindness instead. Unbeknownst to Nan, Nell is giving advice from personal experience when she tells her aunt/mother that choosing to help her sister was the correct choice and the best course of action now is to strive for a satisfying life rather than dwelling in regret.
Currently, Nan deeply follows this advice. She locates Theo and strives to navigate the circumstances she’s in positively. She expresses to him that choosing him was the wisest decision she’s ever made. For a fleeting instant, it seems like perhaps Nan could successfully manage this situation. However, Nan and Theo engage in an intimate moment on the beach, and all Nan can focus on is being with Guy instead. This isn’t a positive development. To make matters worse? After informing Theo about Jinny, he remarks on how frightened she must be out there by herself, but Nan fails to seize that opportunity to mention that Guy is with her, which could potentially cause problems later on.
The discussion between Nan and Nell proves beneficial for both of them. When Patti visits her sister the following day, there’s a noticeable change in their demeanor towards each other. Nell confides that her interactions with Tracy were once playful flirting, not realizing the gravity until it became real. Patti acknowledges she should have shielded her sister from this situation. Although they can forgive each other for their mistakes, they struggle to reveal the truth to Nan. Patti wishes for Nell to rejoin the family, but only as Nan’s aunt. Nell mentions that now, after talking to Nan and getting to know her better, she can’t pretend around her without revealing the truth. It’s a painful admission: “I don’t want to be someone she’s just polite to.” She vows to Patti never to tell Nan the truth, but also finds it impossible to maintain the falsehood.
Patti understands that Tracy, not Nell, is causing harm in people’s lives. To prevent Tracy from leaving Tintagel, she informs Nell that Nell will be staying with her and they’ll travel to New York together, using Tracy’s ticket. She also tells Nell that she should have divorced Tracy twenty years ago. Nan is touched to see Patti making amends with Nell, but when asked about their falling out, Patti chooses not to reveal the details. Instead of addressing the issue directly, Nell offers some guidance to her daughter: “Be extraordinary, my dear,” she says, encouraging Nan to be true to herself. Nell also suggests painting the old castle a bright red. This advice seems fitting for the Dowager of Tintagel. After thanking Patti for this and other gifts, Nell tells her father to leave England politely.
As a cinephile, I must admit, I’ve got my hands full juggling royal responsibilities, married to a man I don’t share the same affection for. It doesn’t make things easier that I sacrificed the one I truly loved to shield my sister, only to find out she’s fled her husband while expecting his child – a situation being labeled as kidnapping in today’s headlines. The accusations against Jinny as being unstable are bad enough, but with her face plastered on every newspaper, it’s just a matter of time before someone recognizes her. And that someone could be Seadown, who approaches me while I’m lost in thought on the Tintagel moors. He’s certifiably insane, and if given the chance, I’d gladly take a swing at him. For now, he grips me tight and warns me that he’ll track down Jinny, leaving me powerless to stop him.
Nan ought to undoubtedly inform Theo about this matter, while that individual must employ any Duke privileges available to handle Seadown. If not as Duke-to-Lord, then simply a husband safeguarding his wife’s dignity? Something? Anything? Instead, Nan repeatedly seeks out Theo’s mother – the gloomiest person on earth. And once again, she assures Nan that she has attended to Jinny, and there is nothing further to be done. Jinny cannot return home due to potential legal repercussions since women have no rights; however, as long as Jinny’s sister remains Duchess, “the law will not pursue her.” In time, another significant news event will overshadow this issue, leaving Jinny abandoned. Seadown won’t locate her, the Dowager guarantees Nan. The wisest course for Nan is to concentrate on her Duchess responsibilities, primarily supporting Theo and maintaining silence. Firstly, she must attend the grand Black & White Ball, where she will formally debut as the Duchess. She should go there in a black dress, blend into the backdrop behind Theo, and “demonstrate to the world how you plan to conduct yourself.
In a different wording, here’s how we could rephrase the given text: Nan chooses to act accordingly. However, her approach to acting is quite distinct from the Dowager’s expectations. People may think there’s no more for Nan to do for her sister, but Nan firmly believes otherwise—she can create a stir, she can shift the focus. True to her conviction, Nan does just that by making a grand entrance at the Black & White Ball in an eye-catching, bold red — or rather, scarlet — dress.

Lord Brightlingsea’s time is running out, yet he and his wife are reluctant to discuss their future plans with their son Richard. However, Conchita insists on addressing the matter, suggesting they may need to sell some of their assets due to the financial difficulties. Despite the crisis, they choose not to do so. With Lord Brightlingsea’s death approaching, it falls upon Conchita and Richard to prevent the family from collapsing financially. In her effort to save the day, Conchita devises a plan: They will guide and accompany young American women seeking an English husband.
Indeed, the Brightlingseas are rather unsavory individuals, yet I must admit that conversation where Lord B expressed hope that some of their thirty-year bond brought joy, and Lady B fought back tears, left quite an impact on me.
It appears that Lizzy could be embarking on a romantic journey of her own. Theo witnesses Lizzy and an MP named Hector Robinson exchanging flirtatious glances, and he encourages her to pursue the relationship. So, it seems Theo is taking on the role of Lizzy’s ally in love? Indeed, that’s intriguing!
Mabel and Honoria are secretly dancing together and making promises to each other, yet they acknowledge that the revelation of Honoria’s father’s illness is distressing in itself, but it also implies that Honoria may soon have to handle her mother alone, which could potentially jeopardize their blossoming romance as they keep their relationship hidden.
To clarify, Guy and Jinny find themselves securely in a quaint little Italian village disguised as Mr. and Mrs. Thwarte. It seems unlikely that they’ll remain undisturbed for much longer.
