How Map Voting will work in Overwatch 2 Season 17

In Season 17 of Overwatch 2, map voting will be introduced, empowering players in both Competitive and Quick Play modes with the ability to influence the game modes and maps they engage in, providing them with greater choice and control.

In addition to the introduction of Hero Bans during Season 16, Map Voting has long been a highly desired feature by Overwatch players for many years.

Since the game was first released in 2016, some players have found issue with specific maps and game modes that don’t appeal to them. Overwatch 1 had the 2CP maps that were disliked by many, while certain Push maps in the sequel have also drawn criticism. As with any game, preferences vary among players, and each one tends to favor certain maps more than others.

For folks who prefer waiting in line for Kings Row over New Junk City, you’ve got something exciting to look forward to from Season 17 onwards. Here’s a brief rundown of what to expect.

Overwatch 2 devs reveal Map Voting feature

In a blog post dated June 17th, the developers talked about Map Voting. They mentioned that following the implementation of role queues, players will be presented with three randomly selected map choices for voting.

They clarified that each vote increases the probability on the map by approximately 10%, and the final decision is made through a random selection process similar to rolling a dice or spinning a roulette wheel.

In a game with 10 players, if they all agree on a specific map, that’s the one they’ll play. But if even just one player prefers another map and votes for it, there’s still a possibility that map could be chosen as well.

To put it another way, when it comes to Map Voting, it’s not a system where the most popular choice prevails.

In the course of the map selection procedure, team conversations, usernames, and votes get concealed. It’s not shocking that this happens since it helps reduce toxic behavior. However, teams with pre-existing groups may gain an edge during the voting phase as they can more easily agree on their choices.

As a gamer, I’ve learned that developers implement leave penalties right from when the map voting begins. This means, should I decide to bail out during the voting phase, I’ll face some consequences for my hasty departure.
