As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve noticed the buzz surrounding Hunter Schafer potentially playing Princess Zelda in the upcoming Legend of Zelda movie. However, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment as whispers suggest she might not land the role after all.
Following the massive box office success of The Super Mario Bros Movie (one of the highest-earning films ever), it seemed only natural that a Zelda film would follow suit. Unlike its animated precursor, which was produced by Illumination, Nintendo is currently developing a live-action version based on their renowned video game series.
According to the latest update, Wes Ball (known for The Maze Runner and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) is set to direct the project. The release date has been shifted to May 7, 2027, with the creators choosing this delay to ensure the film is as excellent as possible. In a statement, Shigeru Miyamoto explained their decision.
There’s no definitive information yet about the game or who will star in it, but Schafer is widely appreciated as the top choice among fans for a potential Zelda project.
Hunter Schafer may be too old for The Legend of Zelda movie
Since news broke about the upcoming Zelda film, there’s been a strong fan consensus that Schafer, famous for his role as Jules in Euphoria, would be ideal for the part of Zelda.
remarkably, as per an earlier report by insider Daniel Richtman, Schafer was reportedly being considered for the role of Zelda in the movie. Since then, there has been a flood of comments from fans expressing their desire to see her bring the princess to life on-screen through her Instagram posts.
1. “If you’re not Zelda, I won’t watch it,” one comment says. “Nintendo, please don’t mess this up. You already have Zelda here,” another user wrote. “You would be ideal for the role of Zelda,” a third commented.
2. “If it’s not Zelda, I won’t tune in,” one person noted. “Nintendo, be careful not to ruin it. You’ve already got Zelda at your disposal,” another user stated. “You would make a great Zelda character,” a third commented.
3. “If this isn’t Zelda, I won’t watch,” one commenter remarked. “Nintendo, don’t spoil it. You’ve already got the character of Zelda,” another user wrote. “You would be perfect for playing Zelda,” a third commented.
4. “I won’t watch if it isn’t Zelda,” one comment states. “Nintendo, be careful not to mess up Zelda,” another user warns. “You could play the role of Zelda well,” a third comment suggests.
Unfortunately, the latest update from Richtman doesn’t bode well for Schafer’s chances.
The studio is currently auditioning actors aged 16 to 23 for the main roles of Zelda and Link in the upcoming live-action Legend of Zelda film.
Schafer is currently 26 years old, and by the time the movie releases, she will have turned 27. However, it’s not certain that this will prevent her from being cast, as some believe Nintendo might be waiting for her to complete work on Euphoria Season 3 before making a decision. But if they are indeed looking for someone within her age range, there’s a chance she may not qualify.
A new piece of news has surfaced: As per ThwipT on X/Twitter, there are rumors that How to Train Your Dragon actor Mason Thames could potentially be cast as Link. Given that Thames is 17 years old, he seems perfectly suited for the role, especially if Richtman’s earlier report is accurate and the project is being developed as a trilogy with all key roles locked in for three films spanning six years.
