Disney Announces 9 Huge Sequels: Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar, Toy Story & More Revealed

Disney is pouring substantial resources into its prominent franchises, and their upcoming lineup features sequels for Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, along with some beloved classics. In recent times, Disney has seen a flurry of sequel releases such as “Captain America: A New Era”, “Moana 2” and the “Return of Mufasa: The Lion King” on the big screen over the past year.

The stream of sequels isn’t showing signs of stopping anytime soon, as Disney plans to release more than a dozen franchise continuations within the next four years.

Disney’s Biggest Confirmed Sequels Over the Next Year and a Half

Disney has recently announced that it plans to release nine sequels from its cinematic lineup over the next 18 months.

Freakier Friday – August 8, 2025

In a follow-up to Disney’s beloved 2003 teen comedy “Freaky Friday,” Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis reprise their roles as the mother-daughter duo who find themselves body-swapped again, but this time, it involves three generations of women getting mixed up.

In addition to the existing turmoil, Julia Butters portrays Lohan’s character’s daughter Harper, while Sophia Hammons is cast as her upcoming stepsister Lily. Remarkably, some original Freaky Friday actors, including Chad Michael Murray and Mark Harmon, are set to appear in the Disney sequel as well.

Tron: Ares – October 10, 2025

The iconic Disney film set within a video game, Tron, got its first sequel, Tron: Legacy, in 2010 – over two and a half decades after the initial movie debuted. With the next installment, Tron: Ares, scheduled for release in 2025, it will be close to 45 years since the franchise started, and it’s gearing up for a powerful resurgence.

In the latest instalment called Tron: Ares, we meet a cutting-edge digital character named Ares, who undertakes a risky assignment by crossing over from the virtual world into reality. Among the fresh faces joining the cast are Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Evan Peters. Notably, Jeff Bridges will be reprising his role as Kevin Flynn in Tron: Ares.

Predator: Badlands – November 7, 2025

Director Dan Trachtenberg revisits the Predator series post the massive triumph of 2022’s Prey, a film that transported the ancient alien to the 18th century. In contrast, Predator: Badlands is set in the future on a far-off planet, where a rejected Predator (Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi) forms an alliance with Thia, an android from the Weyland-Yutani corporation, portrayed by Elle Fanning.

Zootopia 2- November 26, 2025

Approximately ten years later, the sequel, titled “Zootopia 2“, invites viewers once more to revisit the bustling city inhabited by anthropomorphic animals.

In this narrative, we follow the investigative pair, Nick Wilde (portrayed by Jason Bateman) and Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin), as they pursue an elusive enemy, along with the character Gary De’Snake, played by Ke Huy Quan, who adds to their challenges.

Avatar: Fire and Ash – December 19, 2025

As a movie critic, I must admit that my anticipation is running high for James Cameron’s third installment in the Avatar series, following the resounding success of Avatar: The Way of Water at the box office. In Avatar: Fire and Ash, we delve once more into the captivating sci-fi universe of Pandora, where Jake Sully and his kin find themselves face to face with the enigmatic Ash people, a formidable new tribe posing a grave threat to their very existence. The fight for survival and protection of their home and people against the relentless RDA becomes an epic struggle in this latest chapter of the Avatar saga.

The Devil Wears Prada 2 – May 1, 2026

20 years following the initial release, The Devil Wears Prada 2 serves as another heartfelt Disney sequel. The original cast, including Anne Hathaway, Meryl Streep, and Emily Blunt, are slated to return for a plot centering around fashion magazine titan Miranda Priestly. She grapples with a shrinking print media industry, necessitating her to adapt to the changing times.

The Mandalorian & Grogu – May 22, 2026

In an uncommon occurrence for Disney+ TV shows, the story of The Mandalorian and Grogu, previously featured in the series, is now being continued through a film sequel. The Star Wars series initially introduced audiences to Din Djarin, played by Pedro Pascal, who goes by the Mandalorian, and his endearing, force-sensitive young companion, Grogu.

In an exciting turn of events, The Mandalorian and Grogu may encounter familiar faces hailing from Star Wars Rebels, while also introducing fresh characters such as Jeremy Allen White’s portrayal of Rotta the Hutt.

Toy Story 5 – June 19, 2026

It might seem unexpected, but there could be a fifth instalment of Toy Story after the satisfying conclusion of events in Toy Story 4. However, Pixar is moving forward with a sequel in their flagship franchise, and Toy Story 5 appears to explore the influence of technology on children’s playtime, making the toys vie for attention during playtime as they struggle to remain relevant.

Enthusiasts are bound to get thrilled as they’ll discover that a number of prominent characters from the Toy Story series will reappear in the upcoming sequel, with Andrew Stanton (known for his work on Finding Nemo and Finding Dory) taking the director’s chair.

Avengers: Doomsday – December 18, 2026

The upcoming fifth Avengers movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is shaping up to be one of its grandest productions, boasting more than twenty Marvel actors who are part of this epic superhero ensemble film. Directors Anthony and Joe Russo, who previously worked on Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, will once again take the reins for Avengers: Doomsday. This upcoming project also signifies the return of original MCU star Robert Downey Jr., who is set to portray a fresh character, Victor von Doom.

Bonus: Ice Age 6 – December 18, 2026

The first “Ice Age” film to be created under Disney’s wing is the sixth part of the series, but specifics about its plot remain undisclosed as of now. However, D23 Brazil has confirmed that the original voices behind Manny (Ray Romano), Sid (John Leguizamo), Ellie (Queen Latifah), Diego (Denis Leary), and Buck (Simon Pegg) will be reprising their roles in it.

Bonus: Frozen 3 – November 24, 2027

Following the impressive box-office performance of the two “Frozen” movies, Disney is expanding its classic fairy tale series with a third installment. Not much has been disclosed about “Frozen 3” other than a concept sketch depicting Anna, Elsa, and Olaf in an unknown territory (potentially inhabited by a formidable adversary). The upcoming third “Frozen” film will lay the groundwork for “Frozen 4,” which is also in development.

Bonus: Avengers: Secret Wars – December 17, 2027

The last movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Multiverse Saga, titled “Avengers: Secret Wars“, serves as a follow-up to “Avengers: Doomsday” and brings together stories from Phases 4-6. Unlike the consecutive films “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame“, “Avengers: Secret Wars” will not be filmed back-to-back with “Doomsday“. Instead, the film concludes by paving the way for a fresh start in the MCU.

Bonus: Avatar 4 – December 21, 2029

James Cameron has a long-term vision for his science fiction Avatar series. This series will carry on past the 2025 release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, in an as yet unnamed Avatar 4. The forthcoming Avatar film is anticipated to involve a significant time leap and will pave the way for the final movie, Avatar 5.
