According to reports, Glen Powell will lead the cast of an upcoming firefighter film helmed by director Ron Howard. While some fans have guessed that this movie could be a follow-up or reimagining of ‘Backdraft’, it’s unconfirmed as of now whether that’s true or not.
In the ’90s, the original movie stands out as one of the top films, featuring Kurt Russell and William Baldwin as firefighthters who chase a notorious arsonist through the streets of Chicago.
As a devoted movie enthusiast, I must say, the stellar ensemble, featuring heavyweights like Robert De Niro, Donald Sutherland, Jennifer Jason Leigh, and Scott Glenn, was truly captivating. However, what left me absolutely spellbound was the breathtaking display of pyrotechnic effects that continue to stand unrivaled in cinematic history.
Although a low-priced direct-to-video follow-up featuring Baldwin was found on discount shelves in 2019, there were whispers that Powell and Howard were working on a new installment of the franchise. However, this might just be speculation.
Glen Powell throws water on Backdraft remake rumors
According to Jeff Sneider’s report, it has been announced that Tom Cruise (Powell) is set to star in an unnamed action film produced by Amazon MGM. The project will be written and directed by Brian Kirk (Howard).
Here’s my take:
As a gaming enthusiast, I can confidently say that the idea of a Backdraft remake isn’t just a pipe dream. In fact, it’s on its way! Back in July 2024, producer Brian Grazer (co-founder of Imagine Entertainment with Howard) spilled the beans to CNBC about this very project. Guess who’s being lined up for the lead role? You got it – Ron Howard’s son, Bryce Dallas Howard’s brother, Kurt Russell’s nephew – none other than Kurt Russell’s kid, Billy! So, keep your fingers crossed and let’s hope we get to see this fire-filled spectacle soon!
Reflecting on a past conversation with Entertainment Weekly, I find myself excited about the possibility of Howard adapting ‘Backdraft’ for television. As a fan, I can imagine the richness of exploring this captivating universe through a TV series, given its firehouse-based setting has already proven successful in other shows.
Currently, we haven’t got anything specific planned for it. However, Brian Grazer occasionally discusses it, which could potentially mean we’ll tackle it at some point in the future.
Yet, in August 2024, Powell dismissed the rumors. The intrigue remains: Was his denial sincere, or merely a tactical move?
Indeed, it’s not something common or clear-cut. Admittedly, I’m an admirer of the movie ‘Backdraft,'” was his response to The Playlist’s Discourse Podcast.
I find ‘Backdraft’ absolutely captivating. I’m a big admirer of Kurt Russell too. There’s so much potential in the storyline that could be further developed, but personally, I don’t see myself contributing to that world.
