Chinese zoos are warning visitors not to pull tigers’ hair for ‘good luck’

A Chinese zoo has released a warning following incidents where guests were seen plucking a tiger’s hair in a partially open exhibit.

For many centuries in Chinese tradition, the tiger has been regarded as a symbol of good luck, signifying power and might. However, during a visit to a zoo in Liaoning, certain guests crossed the line with this theme.

On June 8, a video was shared on a Chinese social media platform that depicted several individuals reaching into a metal cage to pluck fur from a tiger’s abdomen and tail while the animal remained trapped above.

Guests at China zoo spark outrage for pulling out tigers’ fur

According to the South China Morning Post, someone in the video appears to urge others to pluck even more fur from the tiger.

“Let’s pull more! Tiger hair keeps evil away and protects the home,” they shouted.

I stood there beside the majestic tiger, casually displaying a handful of its magnificent fur, joking, “This makes for an unbeatable keepsake… and it didn’t even cost a dime!

Representatives from the zoo’s animal care team and staff members conversed with Dianshi News – a popular Chinese media outlet – following the widespread sharing of the video, advising visitors to refrain from causing harm to the tigers while they are on site.

At the zoo, you’re asked not to touch any of the animals. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, some tourists haven’t listened to this rule.

It was made clear that tugging on a tiger’s fur could upset these creatures and potentially cause them to attack, which might result in injuries for visitors.

It’s our wish that guests will strive to enhance their conduct and take action to safeguard the wildlife.

A scholar from China University of Political Science and Law communicated with SCMP, stating that causing distress to zoo animals may lead to both financial penalties and administrative sanctions such as written warnings, monetary fines, or even imprisonment.
