As a gamer, I’ve surely noticed the Minecraft smithing table recipe in my crafting menu, but it’s not immediately clear what its purpose is or if it’s beneficial for the average player. However, let me clarify that the smithing table serves to modify your tools and armor. To do this, you’ll require smithing templates along with a variety of materials. This process maintains any enchantments you’ve applied to your tools and armor, and it even allows for upgrading diamond gear to netherite. If you’re surrounded by numerous villagers, the smithing table is essential for the toolsmith to operate effectively.

How to get a smithing table
Sometimes, you may come across a blacksmith’s workstation in a village, with a craftsman busy at work. You’ll often find these toolsmiths inside their houses. Additionally, they might appear in the remnants of old trails. Regardless of the tool you choose to use, you can break and gather them. However, an axe will do the job quickest.
As a gamer myself, I found that the best method to obtain a smithing table is by crafting one yourself. It requires a couple of iron ingots (2 to be precise) along with some good old wooden planks (4 should do the trick, doesn’t matter what type).
How to use a smithing table
A smithing table serves multiple purposes: upgrading diamond equipment, altering villager jobs, attaching trim to armor, enhancing the bass of note blocks, and as fuel. Just position a note block above it to amplify the bass sound produced by the note block.
How to upgrade diamond gear to netherite
When you work at the smithing station, your diamond equipment will keep any enchantments added to it. It will also preserve its wear and tear level, meaning that if you use a nearly-broken diamond pickaxe on a smithing table to upgrade it to netherite, it won’t repair the damage. Additionally, upgrading items with netherite using a smithing table doesn’t deduct any experience points.
To craft an item at the smithing station, place one Netherite Ingot, a Diamond gear piece, and a Netherite-trimmed armor upgrade in the designated slots. Once done, collect your newly crafted item from the smithing station, and it’s now ready for use.
How to change villager professions
In a village, if there’s an unused smithing table and you haven’t assigned it to any villager yet, you can switch the occupation of an existing villager who hasn’t been traded before. But, once a villager has been traded with, they won’t be able to change professions. To ensure this happens, simply avoid trading with the villager and position the smithing table close to them. Eventually, they will start using it, transforming their profession into that of a toolsmith.
How to apply armor trims
To adorn your armor with a decorative trim at the crafting station, you’ll need three essential items: a smithing pattern, the armor piece itself, and the mineral or gem that corresponds to the color you desire for the trim. The design of the armor will be influenced by the smithing template you selected during the creation process.
Armor colors
You can use the following items to guarantee armor color during this process:
- Amethyst Shard – purple
- Copper Ingot – orange
- Diamond – light blue
- Emerald – green
- Gold Ingot – yellow
- Iron Ingot – gray
- Lapis Lazuli – dark blue
- Nether Quartz – white
- Netherite Ingot – red/brown
- Redstone Dust – red
- Resin Brick – light orange
