Better late than never. Sony apparently realized its mistake and removed regional restrictions on its hits on Steam

It seems that Sony is now acknowledging their error and removing regional limitations on their PC video games.

To begin with, let’s provide some context regarding the situation at hand. The restrictions we see today stem from a change implemented by the company last year, where a PlayStation Network account became necessary to play their PC conversion games. Unfortunately, this service is unavailable in more than 100 countries, which means that residents of these nations can’t buy these games either. The company has also extended this restriction to the PC version of Stellar Blade, despite Sony only being the publisher for this game and it not requiring a PSN account. This led players to suspect that an extra outfit, which can be unlocked by linking Steam and PlayStation Network accounts, was the root cause. Fortunately, the regional lock was lifted prior to the game’s release in this instance.

It seems clear now that Sony is taking a more sensible approach and removing regional restrictions on their games. While the company hasn’t made an official statement, changes have been observed in the Steam database, with titles like these being affected so far:

  1. God of War Ragnarok;
  2. Helldivers 2;
  3. Marvel’s Spider-Man 2;
  4. The Last of Us Part II Remastered.

We’re optimistic that Sony might have abandoned regional restrictions for PC versions of their games, as evidenced by the launch of Days Gone Remastered without such constraints two months back. This leads us to believe that this could be a lasting shift in their approach to game publishing.
