Hideo Kojima Explains Why He Wants Death Stranding 2 To Be Divisive

Previously this year, Hideo Kojima openly expressed mixed feelings about the favorable feedback for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, as testers praised it. Back then, Kojima expressed his disinterest in creating blockbusters that necessitate an 80% approval rating, instead preferring to court controversy. Recently, Kojim has reiterated and clarified his reasons for desiring a polarizing reaction from gamers.

Through an interpreter, Kojima Productions’ Aki Saito relayed that Kojima himself expressed his reluctance towards creating a blockbuster game. His reasoning was that such games tend to quickly fade from memory. Instead, Kojima aims for Death Stranding 2 to not only be remembered but also to stand the test of time, remaining relevant and impactful over the next few decades.

According to Kojima, all current entertainment seems simple and straightforward, but he felt Death Stranding required both fans and non-fans because it’s something new. He likened it to Metal Gear, which wasn’t well-received initially but gained recognition over ten years. In contrast, Death Stranding 2 was more popular than expected during testing, leading him to think, “Perhaps this is an issue.” It turned out to be more liked than he had anticipated.

Despite Kojima having left a USB stick filled with game concepts intended for future use posthumously, he has expressed a preference for his successors at Kojima Productions not to merely duplicate his methods in creating games. He believes the studio could potentially falter if they were to adopt such an approach.

The sequel to Death Stranding, titled Death Stranding 2, will be available on PlayStation 5 starting June 26th. Following this game, Hideo Kojima has more projects lined up – first, an Xbox-exclusive title called OD, and second, a spy-action game named Physint. In addition to these, Kojima is collaborating with A24 on the Death Stranding film adaptation and considering the possibility of directing his own original movie in the future.
