Andy Serkis makes big promise for Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum

Andy Serkis is preparing for the preliminary stages of “The Lord of the Rings: The Quest for Gollum”, as the director suggests that this production will be a ‘must-see’ for enthusiasts of the initial trilogy.

Currently, Middle-earth is experiencing some unusual times. Towards the end of last year, a movie from the franchise titled “War of the Rohirrim” was released in anime format. Critics gave it mixed reviews and unfortunately, it didn’t perform well commercially.

Back in 2024, the second season of The Rings of Power premiered on Amazon Prime Video. Compared to its first season, it saw larger-scale battles, dramatic plot twists, and some significant revelations in the finale (spoiler alert: Gandalf!). Despite Amazon claiming it was a hit, the number of viewers decreased.

Currently, Peter Jackson is back working on a new film that’s being directed by Andy Serkis – titled “The Quest for Gollum”.

The Hunt for Gollum will recapture the “feel” of Lord of the Rings

At the Annecy Animation Festival, Serkis shared that the team is currently just beginning their journey with The Hunt for Gollum project.

For nearly a year now, we’ve discussed the movie. In the upcoming months, we plan to enter a preparation phase,” he clarified.

We plan to start filming sometime between early and mid-next year, approximately, and the duration of shooting will depend on the project since it’s a substantial movie. It should be completed and ready for release by December 2027.

I’m really looking forward to returning to New Zealand, where I’ll rejoin my friends and family, and participate in an activity that I believe will be unexpected, but still perfectly fitting with the mythos and atmosphere of the trilogy.

I believe the familiarity you’ll sense is quite similar, yet we’re exploring more thoroughly the character once called Smeagol, but commonly recognized as Gollum.

The upcoming movie will delve into Gollum’s time in Mordor under Sauron’s control, before he endeavors to journey to the Shire. According to Tolkien’s additional notes, Gandalf dispatches Aragorn on a quest to locate him. Essentially, it could be considered a prelude (much of the story may take place between Gandalf giving Frodo the One Ring and their return to the Shire).

Is there a possibility that Sir Ian McKellen might reprise his role as Gandalf, but could Viggo Mortensen be returning as Aragorn too?

Philippa Boyens expressed that she has no intention of reprising the role for that character. She feels the same way Andy does about this matter. In her opinion, deciding who should take on the character and ensuring a smooth transition will be a challenging task, or as she put it, ‘it’s going to be a process.’

Viggo is a constant presence for us. His portrayal of the character resonates deeply with us, so we believe he’ll have a significant role in whatever unfolds. It could be that he passes the torch to someone else, or he might continue playing the part himself.

In our recent conversation, Boyens shared which one Lord of the Rings book she hopes to have the rights to adapt. Additionally, you can catch up on updates for Season 3 of The Rings of Power.
