As a dedicated gamer, I’ve learned recently that my hopes for an Xbox handheld device might not be coming to fruition. This latest development comes after news in late May hinted at plans for such a device being put on hold.
According to The Verge’s findings, Microsoft continues to be enthusiastic about developing “next-generation Xbox hardware,” but not necessarily in the conventional sense. Instead, they hint at a potential scenario where computer manufacturers like Asus might release devices that would also qualify as next-gen Xbox consoles.

In a recent Xbox podcast interview, Spencer hinted at a more integrated partnership between PC (Personal Computer) and console platforms. He stated that the current collaboration between the gaming division and the Windows team is the closest he’s ever witnessed in his three decades with the company. Spencer further explained that Windows PC, being an open platform, has potential to be regarded as a game console when managed appropriately.
Although Microsoft doesn’t plan on creating a dedicated gaming handheld device themselves, they are collaborating with external devices such as the newly unveiled ROG Ally handhelds by Asus.

In February 2024, Xbox president Sarah Bond announced that Microsoft was developing new Xbox hardware. Indeed, this is a bold statement, but she didn’t provide details on how they plan to achieve this or when the console might be released.
The Xbox Series S/X consoles are expected to debut this upcoming holiday season, however, we don’t have any information regarding their prices at the moment. These devices are capable of running a variety of games, even those originally designed for PlayStation or PC platforms.
