Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” movies are widely regarded as one of the best movie trilogies ever made, possibly even the very best. Even with over 20 years having passed since they were first released, they continue to captivate millions of viewers and have been thoroughly analyzed, discussed, and critiqued. Despite my familiarity with a great deal about them, I recently discovered something new.
For the first time on the big screen, Orlando Bloom appeared in “The Lord of the Ring: The Fellowship of the Ring.” This role catapulted him to stardom despite his limited dialogue. Interestingly, he had another movie that came out around the same time as “Fellowship,” which led to an unusually peculiar hairstyle for Orlando Bloom.
Orlando Bloom Had A Mohawk Under That Awesome Legolas Hair
It’s likely not shocking to anyone that Orlando Bloom wore a wig while portraying Legolas in the Lord of the Rings films, given that his iconic long, blonde locks were not real. The fact that he might have been able to grow such hair naturally was immaterial, as his actual hairstyle, showcased in a blog he maintained during filming, was a mohawk.
Prior to embarking on J.R.R. Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings” film trilogy, Orlando Bloom appeared in Ridley Scott’s “Black Hawk Down.” In that movie, his character sported a mohawk hairstyle, and by the time he started working on Peter Jackson’s epic, Bloom still retained that distinctive hairdo. Therefore, if you were unaware before, now you know what lies beneath his wig in those films.
Regarding “The Lord of the Rings,” this specific bit of trivia was information I was previously aware of. However, I recently uncovered another fact about Legolas that seems quite apparent in retrospect.
Legolas Doesn’t Talk Much In Fellowship Of The Ring
In the epic trilogy, Legolas is an essential member of the Fellowship, leading one to assume he’d have a significant role. However, his contributions might be more noticeable in the latter two films, as compared to The Fellowship of the Ring, where he seems to be relatively quiet.
During an interview about Orlando Bloom’s latest film, “Deep Cover,” with VT (streamable on Prime Video), his co-star Bryce Dallas Howard inquires about how many lines Legolas had in the initial “Lord of the Rings” movie. Even the character of Legolas himself was taken aback by the response.

Initially, it might not appear that 17 lines are insignificant, given Legolas doesn’t make his entrance until halfway through The Fellowship of the Ring. However, taking into account the movie spans three hours, even half of that is a considerable length. Thus, the scarcity of dialogue still leaves me astonished.
As a devoted fan of “The Lord of the Rings”, I must admit that Legolas often finds himself sharing the limelight with quite a crowd. Given the expansive ensemble of characters, perhaps there were simply not enough opportunities for him to voice his thoughts.
