The producer of Capcom revealed that the reason for the delayed release of a fresh Onimusha game is due to their engagement in various other projects.
2026 marks the anticipated release of “Onimusha: Way of the Sword,” which is 20 years after the last fresh installment in the series, “Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams.” Although the return of the series has sparked enthusiasm, we were curious about Capcom’s delay in producing a new Onimusha game considering their active support for other flagship franchises like Resident Evil. At Summer Game Fest Play Days, producer Akihito Kadowaki explained that Capcom has simply been quite occupied, which is why there has been such a significant gap between the launch of new Onimusha games.
Initially, there were many individuals at Capcom eager to develop a new Onimusha game. Yet, given that Capcom produces numerous titles annually, it’s challenging to find and mobilize enough personnel for each project. Regrettably, the timing didn’t align due to the need to allocate our workforce to other ongoing projects as well.

By examining data from sites such as MobyGames, it is evident that Capcom has released numerous games, approximately hundreds, between Dawn of Dreams and Way of the Sword. Given this extensive history, Kadowaki’s argument becomes clear. However, something shifted. Kadowaki finally suggests that a suitable team of developers managed to collaborate around five years ago. It is also worth noting that Capcom’s in-house game engine, RE Engine, had advanced to a point where Capcom could employ it to create a new Onimusha title without encountering significant problems. This engine powers the latest versions of Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Dragon’s Dogma games.
At the onset of 2020, I managed to gather the ideal team and set sail on the journey to develop Way of the Sword. As fate would have it, around the same time, we completed the development of RE Engine, making it ripe for optimal usage in our upcoming project.
The individual shared that during the creation of Onimusha: Way of the Sword, the team found no major problems when using RE Engine. Occasionally, a sequel for a franchise might not materialize even with fan enthusiasm, as the necessary resources and technology may be lacking. It appears that an ideal combination of factors has facilitated the emergence of this new Onimusha game. Remarkably, prior experience with previous games is not required to appreciate it.
Onimusha: Way of the Sword will be released for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2026.
