Outer Worlds 2 Director Reacts To $80 Price, Says Take It Up With Microsoft

In response to Microsoft pricing The Outer Worlds 2 at $80, its game director, Brandon Adler, has spoken up. He clarified during an interview that Obsidian didn’t actually determine the game’s price, instead suggesting that those uncomfortable with the price point should address their concerns directly to Microsoft.

As a game creator, we take great pleasure in crafting engaging games. In an interview with GamesRadar, it was expressed that while we don’t decide the prices for our games, as a developer, my personal preference would be for everyone to enjoy the game since that’s the ultimate goal. However, if you’re wondering about the $79.99 price point, it would be best to discuss that with the Xbox team directly.

In simple terms, “The Outer Worlds 2” is Microsoft’s inaugural game priced at $80, which might seem unexpected to some, but considering Microsoft’s announcement that they would start charging such prices for certain games by 2025, it’s less of a shock. Additionally, Microsoft has increased the cost of Xbox consoles.

Excluding Xbox, Nintendo is setting the price of Mario Kart World at $80. It’s anticipated that other game publishers might increase their prices similarly. Meanwhile, 2K Games finds itself in a pricing debate as Randy Pitchford, head of Gearbox, remains uncertain about whether Borderlands 4 will cost $80 or not.

In similar fashion, the statements made by both Adler regarding The Outer Worlds 2 and Pitchford about Borderlands 4 align. As creators, they aim for a wide audience to experience their games, yet they understand that it’s a commercial endeavor, necessitating profit to create more content. Similar to Adler, Pitchford also emphasized that he does not dictate pricing; instead, it’s decided by 2K Games in his case.

Regarding Xbox, the head of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, consistently emphasizes that his primary focus is ensuring profitability and success for the company, which may necessitate certain compromises.

According to Spencer, we are responsible for managing our business effectively, ensuring it thrives and remains profitable in terms of revenue and profitability. This forms the very base for us.

On October 29th, The Outer Worlds 2 will be released for the Xbox Series X|S, PS5, and PC. If you’d prefer not to spend $80 on it, consider subscribing to Game Pass Ultimate instead. This service allows you to play the game as part of your membership, but please note that Game Pass is currently unavailable on PlayStation systems.
