Five years have passed since Naughty Dog unveiled The Last of Us: Part 2, and with HBO preparing Season 3, enthusiasm and expectations for a third installment are at an all-time high. However, showrunner Craig Mazin has only a slight idea about the possible game’s storyline but remains uncertain if it will ever materialize.
In a conversation with BAFTA regarding Season 2 of The Last of Us, Mazin mentioned that Neil Druckmann, the game creator and co-showrunner, shared some concepts for a potential Part 3 with him. However, Druckmann expressed he would be content if the game never materialized.
He mentions that he has some ideas from Neil about a potential third installment of the game which are still up in the air. He’s unsure if they’ve decided on one specific idea yet. He also shares his thoughts, expressing hope for Part 3, but also suggesting that sometimes less might be better. In his opinion, it’s more meaningful to appreciate the fact that the games happened at all rather than being sad that they ended. He highly regards Naughty Dog as an exceptional game studio, praising their ability to create stunning art and convey what could be achieved in television through animation.
He persisted, expressing his ability to act selfishly by requesting Druckmann to produce Part 3, yet he has a sense that doing so might deprive the studio of other outstanding games they could create in its stead.
It doesn’t really make a difference what I prefer; they’ll proceed with their plans. However, I’ll be there on the first day to enjoy Intergalactic, and if there’s a new Uncharted or The Last of Us, I won’t hesitate to play them.
According to the latest remarks by Druckmann, there’s no definite confirmation for The Last of Us: Part 3, but he hasn’t ruled out the possibility either.
At Naughty Dog, we’re currently engaged in the development of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, a project we’ve been nurturing for quite some time now. This endeavor is consuming all our energies, he mentioned. I’m investing every ounce of my effort into these projects as if they were my last, which suggests that there might not be any more installments of The Last of Us series. However, under the right circumstances and perfect alignment of factors, who knows what the future may hold?
At present, Naughty Dog is busy developing several video games. In addition to the game titled “Intergalactic,” they are also secretly working on another project.
