Disney+ has given approval for “Gold Land,” an enthralling Korean crime thriller series penned by the talented writer Hwang Jo-yoon, who is renowned for scripting Park Chan-wook’s “Oldboy.
The filmmaker Hwang Jo-yoon, known for writing films such as “Oldboy” (2003), “Rampant,” and “Memoir of a Murderer,” will be making his first appearance in the streaming world with this upcoming project.
Actors Park Bo-young (“The Light Store”) and Kim Sung-cheol (“Dead End: The Game of Chance”) will lead a high-speed drama centered around illegal trade, debt collectors, and fleeing from one’s history.

Gold Land” tells the story of Heeju, a woman from a secluded town, who ends up with a stash of gold bars due to a smuggling operation gone wrong. As she is trapped in a van loaded with gold and chased by ruthless criminals, Heeju makes a desperate journey back to a place she had sworn off – her former hometown.
In this series, Park Bo-young takes on the role of Kim Heeju, a resilient character who yearns to leave her past behind. Meanwhile, Kim Sung-cheol portrays Jang Wook, or “Woogy,” a criminal figure from her old neighborhood who is pursuing Heeju as part of his organization’s operations. The show is helmed by director Kim Sung-hoon, known for his work on “Chief Detective 1958” and “Confidential Assignment.
The announcement was made as Disney+ broadens its selection of Korean content, with plans for several new series: “Delusion” (working title), which focuses on a vampire in grief; “Low Life,” chronicling ruthless individuals chasing a life-altering prize; and “Tempest,” where a diplomat and agent work together to expose the truth behind an attack that endangers the stability of the Korean peninsula.
2025 saw Disney+ showcasing a selection of popular Korean originals such as “Unmasked,” “Hyper Knife,” and “Nine Puzzles.” Remarkably, these shows quickly rose to become the most-watched Korean content on the platform worldwide. This accomplishment was achieved less than two weeks after their debut on May 21.
