‘Harry Potter’ Star Tom Felton on Playing Draco Malfoy on Broadway and Why J.K. Rowling’s Controversy Doesn’t Impact His View of the Franchise: ‘I’ve Not Seen Anything Bring the World Together More Than Potter’

20 years after its initial run, Tom Felton had assumed that the enchantment of the “Harry Potter” universe might have faded. However, he’s now poised to once again play Draco Malfoy in the stage production of “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” on Broadway, demonstrating that the magic is still very much alive.

Felton expressed that despite the passage of years, it seems the enthusiasm from fans hasn’t waned, as he shared with Gordon Cox of EbMaster’s during the Tony Awards on Sunday. He’s thrilled about his upcoming Broadway debut because it’s performed live instead of filmed. It took approximately nine months to film a movie, but this is condensed into one experience. Everything has been reimagined and transformed into a fresh, heartfelt narrative. Plus, he gets to play a father, which he finds enjoyable.

Without a doubt, the “Harry Potter” franchise continues to thrive, with its stage show and an upcoming TV series on HBO. However, the controversial opinions expressed by author J.K. Rowling, such as her stance against transgender rights, frequently eclipse this excitement. When prompted about whether debates surrounding Rowling’s views affect his work within the series, Felton admitted that he isn’t deeply involved in the conversation, but he can’t deny that it might.

The “Harry Potter” series remains popular due to its stage show and upcoming TV adaptation on HBO. But discussions about J.K. Rowling’s controversial views often outshine the excitement. When asked if these debates affect his work in the franchise, Felton said he usually doesn’t pay attention, but he can’t completely ignore it.

As a film enthusiast, I’m constantly reminded of my good fortune to explore the globe – here I am in New York City – and nothing has united the world quite like ‘Harry Potter.’ Emma Watson played an essential role in this global phenomenon, and for that reason, I’m deeply appreciative.

19 years following the conclusion of the original “Harry Potter” series, we find ourselves in a new era where Draco Malfoy, along with Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger, have grown up and are now parents sending their offspring to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Starting November 11th, Felton’s stint in the Broadway show will span over 19 weeks, concluding on March 22nd, 2026. This unique engagement marks the debut of a cast member from the original “Harry Potter” series in the stage adaptation of “Cursed Child.” As Felton familiarizes himself with the role, he’s discovering that creating magic on stage is quite distinct from filmmaking. During his initial meeting with director John Tiffany to prepare for the part, Felton expressed his reluctance to delve too deeply into the intricacies of the special effects.

Felton shared, “They told me I’d need to as there are numerous physical stunts involved.” In the movies, we relied heavily on green screens and post-production effects. But in this show, everything is genuine and live, so I can’t wait to dive into those challenges.

Tonight’s Tony Awards, led by host Cynthia Erivo, are set to air on CBS. It is Felton who will be handing out the award for Best Actress in a Featured Role during tonight’s ceremony.
