Lilo & Stitch Dominates Box Office Again While Ballerina Stumbles in John Wick’s Shadow

In a hypothetical duel between Stitch from Lilo & Stitch and Eve Macarro, portrayed by Ana de Armas in Ballerina, it’s challenging to predict who would emerge victorious. While Eve is a skilled assassin, Stitch, being an alien with exceptional durability and cunningness, offers a strong challenge. However, when it comes to box office success, Stitch takes the lead: he wins the contest.

Lilo & Stitch Wins The Domestic Box Office For The Third Weekend In A Row

Lilo & Stitch is doing exceptionally well in theaters. Despite tough competition upon its release close to Memorial Day, it’s been pulling large audiences. Even after three weeks, its popularity hasn’t waned. Last week, ticket sales decreased by 47% compared to the same timeframe earlier, but according to The Numbers, this family-friendly film has earned an additional $32.5 million in the U.S.

The accumulated earnings of “Lilo & Stitch” in the U.S. and Canada has reached a total of $335.8 million so far. If it maintains audience interest for another few weeks, it could potentially surpass the title of “Biggest Domestic Release of 2025.” Meanwhile, Jared Hess’ “A Minecraft Movie” is still contributing to its domestic earnings, having been screened in 346 locations and earning $290,000 over the last three days. However, “Lilo & Stitch” needs to outperform it by an additional $87.8 million to surpass its total.

After the relatively unsuccessful launch of Marc Webb’s “Snow White,” Disney certainly appreciates this recent victory, as the global box office earnings of their live-action remake fell short compared to the production costs, totaling only $205.5 million while costing over double what it took to produce “Lilo & Stitch.

Based on its current trajectory, “Lilo & Stitch” is shaping up to be one of Disney’s most financially successful live-action remakes thus far. For instance, Guy Ritchie’s “Aladdin” earned $232.6 million in its 17th day at the box office, and Rob Marshall’s “The Little Mermaid” reached a similar figure of $229.2 million. The upcoming 2025 film may not rival Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King,” which had amassed an impressive $431.2 million by its third weekend, but the projected earnings are promising.

The movie continues to perform exceptionally well abroad compared to its domestic box office, raking in approximately $436.8 million overseas. This international success contributes to a global total of $772.6 million for the film so far.

Worldwide, the animated film “Lilo & Stitch” is currently holding the third spot for highest grossing movies of 2025. It’s going to be tough for any other movie to earn more than Yu Yang’s “Ne Zha 2,” which has garnered a staggering $2 billion in China, but it will certainly be intriguing to observe if “Lilo & Stitch” can eventually outperform “A Minecraft Movie,” currently standing at approximately $948.6 million earned globally.

Ballerina Settles For Second Place With So-So Numbers By John Wick Standards

It’s clear why Lionsgate unveiled three new John Wick spin-offs this year – the franchise has turned into a heavyweight at the box office. The initial film only grossed $14.4 million when it debuted in October 2014, but its strong word of mouth drew audiences in. Once the movie wrapped up its global run with $87.7 million, director Chad Stahelski and star Keanu Reeves teamed up again for John Wick: Chapter 2. Not only did it double the domestic opening weekend of the first film ($30.4 million), but it raked in a total of $171.5 million worldwide.

2023 saw Chad Stahelski’s “John Wick: Chapter 4” rake in a staggering $447.3 million at the box office, sparking anticipation that “Ballerina” might be a blockbuster hit. However, its initial performance has been less than spectacular so far. The film garnered positive reviews from critics, especially considering the years of apprehension caused by rumors of extensive reshoots. Yet, the audience response has been relatively subdued thus far. According to Deadline, the production cost for this action movie ranges between $80-90 million, and it only managed to earn $25 million in its first three days domestically.

Chapter 3 – Parabellum (with John Wick: Chapter 4 receiving an “A” and the original John Wick a “B”).

In the days to come, the upcoming weekend promises an exciting face-off at the box office. While Ballerina won’t face stiff competition from a fresh action film attempting to overshadow it, Lilo & Stitch could potentially lose some of its audience to another newly released live-action adaptation of a contemporary animated feature – namely Dean DeBlois’ How To Train Your Dragon. I’ll also add that it’s amusing to note that DeBlois was the director of the original animated Lilo & Stitch movie for Disney.
