Xbox Games Have Started Appearing On The Xbox App On PC, And No One Knows Why

Before the Xbox Games Showcase at Summer Game Fest 2025, various Xbox games have started showing up in Microsoft’s Xbox app on PC. Although you can’t play them yet, this might be an early peek into Microsoft’s plan to merge its PC and Xbox platforms by offering a unified library for all your game purchases.

This method is consistent with an unusual marketing strategy that emerged when Microsoft unveiled Gears of War: Reloaded earlier this year. Notably, Xbox Wire announced the game would be released on the PC version of Xbox for the first time, using the Xbox name in its title, which is a novelty for Microsoft’s PC platform. This trend continued with the logo displayed in the MIO: Memories in Orbit trailer, as pointed out by The Verge, where “Xbox PC” was listed among the platforms for release.

Currently, a variety of Xbox games are showing up on the PC version of the Xbox app, ranging from recent releases for Xbox Series X|S to older Xbox 360 games. At this point, these games cannot be played unless they have previously been released on both platforms. It’s uncertain whether Microsoft is aiming to consolidate your Xbox game library across all devices or if there might be upcoming plans for streaming or emulation of these titles.

Microsoft is stepping up its game in refining its PC app, aiming to match Valve’s SteamOS. Since hardware brands like Lenovo are opting for devices running Valve’s Linux over Windows, Microsoft has signaled its intent to optimize gaming on Windows, applicable to desktops and handhelds. This move comes before its partnership with Asus on an Xbox-branded portable gaming device. Potential improvements could involve seamless integration of Steam and the Epic Games Store within a single app, which is currently somewhat cumbersome when using SteamOS for this purpose.

During Summer Game Fest, Microsoft plans to unveil several anticipated Xbox titles, including State of Decay 3, Perfect Dark, Fable, Gears of War: E-Day, Everwild, and Hollow Knight Silksong. The event featuring these reveals, along with a post-show for The Outer Worlds 2, will be streamed live starting at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET on Sunday, June 8.
