At the Future Games Show Summer Event recently, Nightdive Studios revealed a fresh multiplayer trailer for the “System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster.” This updated version of the 1999 sci-fi horror action RPG game is set to launch on PC and gaming consoles on June 26, 2025.
In celebration of its 25th anniversary, the remastered version of System Shock 2 has significantly upgraded its co-op multiplayer mode compared to the original released in 1999 and Nightdive’s initial re-release in 2013. This means that both longtime fans and newcomers can now engage in cross-platform multiplayer, spanning PC and console platforms, along with various other enhancements. Essentially, this edition offers the ultimate System Shock 2 experience for veterans and new players alike.
Back in the day, I was utterly captivated by the groundbreaking masterpiece known as System Shock 2. This game took storytelling, atmosphere, and gameplay to unprecedented heights within the gaming world, paving the way for a slew of titles to emulate its brilliance. It redefined what was possible in first-person games, making players see the boundless potential of narrative in these types of games. To top it off, it scooped up more than a dozen awards, including being crowned “Game of the Year” multiple times. Simply put, System Shock 2 set a new standard for gaming storytelling and left an indelible mark on the industry.
42 years after the initial events of System Shock, the villainous SHODAN and her ruthless mutant horde make a comeback to terrorize the starship Von Braun once more. Players take on the role of a soldier who is revived from cryo-sleep, finding that his body has been modified with cybernetic enhancements. As he navigates the derelict spacecraft to uncover the chilling truth behind its state, he’ll have to fine-tune his customizable abilities and make use of potent weapons and psychic powers to endure SHODAN’s monstrous creations – all while challenging her delusional belief in her own deity-like status.
