Ballerina’s Director Unleashes Insane Weapon Fights That Will Blow Your Mind!

After the debut of the movie Ballerina, director Len Wiseman discussed with filmmakers about integrating the John Wick universe and designing action sequences that showcased lead actress Ana de Armas’ abilities. To achieve this, he equipped protagonist Eve Macarro with a fresh selection of weapons, including using ice skates as deadly blades during the third act. The choreography for this fight scene involved purchasing ordinary skates, where he “spread fake blood on them and filmed a few moves in my garage” to demonstrate how she would use them like gauntlets on her hands. He then shared his ideas with the stunt team at 87eleven so they could further develop it.

Essential for our collaboration, he emphasized, was making sure the action served as a continuation of Ana de Armas’ performance, explaining, “In more complex sequences with intricate choreography and numerous details to recall, acting can get overshadowed. However, Ana is determined to prevent that. A lot of emotion and intensity are being conveyed throughout the action.

Ballerina Has No Shortage of Action

Initially, the trailers for Ballerina suggested some of these distinctive fights, like Macarro battling a thug armed with flamethrowers. However, other conflicts needed more intricate planning. For instance, one fight scene featured Macarro employing hand-grenades to dispose of his foes, which Wiseman likened to a “snowball fight,” yet employed cinematic techniques to achieve genuine consequences in real-time.

He revealed that to create an intense feeling in the sequence, he opted for longer takes and incorporated numerous trap doors and concealed parts of the set. This choice made the timing quite difficult, but he admitted it was exactly what he wanted because he doesn’t enjoy making a movie without challenges or tension.

Between “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” and “John Wick: Chapter 4”, the movie “Ballerina” is set, following Macarro as she learns assassin skills under the Ruska Roma crime syndicate. After her father was killed when she was a child by the same organization, she seeks revenge. Along with Armas, new actors like Gabriel Byrne join the cast, while Reeves, McShane, Huston, and Reddick make appearances in supporting roles as Wick and other established characters. However, Reidick’s appearance is his final one on screen. “Ballerina” was originally scheduled for release a year ago, but due to reshoots, McShane had to delay his part by the same period; instead of adding new scenes to the movie’s plot, it seems they were used to refine or enhance existing ones.

Although it has the lowest critical rating among the John Wick films, Ballerina shares the same score with John Wick: Chapter 4 on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of this article. Additionally, confirmed spinoffs include an anime prequel delving into Wick’s past and a film that will stem from Chapter 4.
