If Bobby’s love interest had been chosen differently for the character 9-1-1, the show’s dynamic would have taken a different course. The drama series centered around first responders is still grappling with the decision to write off Captain Bobby Nash (played by Peter Krause). Although the final episode of season 8 leaves room for optimism about the future of the show and hints at a new leader for the 118, it remains unclear how the absence of Bobby will affect his surviving colleagues.
The events following Bobby’s death are straightforwardly defined due to how 9-1-1 neatly outlined his primary relationships. Athena (Angela Bassett) represents his deepest love, and she was the only significant romantic figure in the series. Buck (Oliver Stark), in a sense, is like a son to him, being the last member of the 118 he communicated with before passing away. However, an early decision in the show’s timeline concerning Abby (Connie Britton) could have drastically altered one of the most emotional relationships throughout the series. While Athena and Bobby might have found a way to heal, it is questionable whether Buck and Bobby would have maintained their bond under such circumstances.
Bobby Was Originally Going To Be Paired With Abby In 9-1-1
There Was Going To Be A Love Triangle
Reflecting on a potential twist in the early days of “9-1-1,” as I recently shared in an interview with TV Insider, my character Bobby and Aisha Hinds’ Henrietta (Henrietta Wilson) might have found ourselves entangled in a love triangle with Buck. If things had unfolded differently, this romantic dynamic would have begun when both Bobby and Abby were visiting Buck in the hospital, sparking from there.
Sure thing!
“Let me take you back to an old memory. Do you recall in the first season of our favorite show, when I was lying in a hospital bed due to a 9-1-1 call? Abby was by my side, and unfortunately, Bobby Nash entered the scene. The initial plan was to introduce a love triangle there. At that moment, my feelings were quite intense, similar to protecting my own relationship, and I remember thinking, “No, what do you mean? No, that’s not Buck and Abby. You can’t.” I’m relieved it never happened, and we didn’t follow through with that storyline.
Stark openly shares his past reservations about the storyline with Hinds, revealing that he felt a sense of guardianship towards Buck and Abby’s relationship. That brief romance significantly shaped Buck’s character traits, such as his impulsiveness and tendency to act quickly, which are still noticeable seven seasons later. Although Stark doesn’t elaborate on why the 9-1-1 love triangle was abandoned, it might have been due to its potential impact on some of the show’s core relationships.
Bobby & Buck Both Pining Over Abby Would Have Made Their Father-Son Relationship Less Likely
It Would Have Felt Different
Initially, the first season of 9-1-1 seems quite different from its current form. The emergencies were more extravagantly outrageous, and relationships like the one between Hen and Karen (Tracie Thoms) were less stable. This is also true for Bobby’s bond with Buck. In season 1’s episode “A Whole New You”, Hen and Howard (Kenneth Choi) discover Bobby creating an online dating profile. They all joke about it gently, but Buck takes it too far, making fun of him.
In a different phrasing, the scenario could be described as follows: Bobby, the young firefighter, unintentionally caused some trouble with his blunt remarks, which were severe enough for Howard to intervene and divert the conversation away from Bobby’s past romantic troubles before meeting Athena. If these two characters had been embroiled in a love triangle, similar exchanges like Bobby teasing Buck for being impulsive and dim-witted while Buck retorted by calling his superior old-fashioned, might have occurred repeatedly.
Regardless of whether 9-1-1 took a more serious approach than portrayed in “A Whole New You,” it would be challenging to imagine the progression of the bond between Buck and Bobby into the deep respect and affection they share. This development hinges on whether the love triangle was intended as a brief, one-episode plot or a longer, ongoing storyline. The scene that Stark mentions appears in the sixth episode of the season, “Heartbreaker,” with only four episodes left before Abby’s departure, and it could have unfolded in various ways.
Even if their fights had been intense, it’s unlikely that Bobby and Buck would have formed the close father-son bond the series is famous for. Their past as romantic rivals would have added a layer of complexity to their relationship. This isn’t an impossible hurdle for the show and its writers, but it could have made their otherwise flawless relationship feel strange or off-kilter.
Buck & Bobby’s Relationship In 9-1-1 Is Arguably The Show’s Best Dynamic
It’s Up There, At Least
A significant factor contributing to the success of 9-1-1 is the strong dynamic among the cast members, which often elevates episodes that might not resonate otherwise. For instance, the bond between Buck and Eddie (played by Ryan Guzman), though their romantic tension remains unresolved despite its ebb and flow, has earned much affection from viewers.
Many top-notch 9-1-1 duos share a significant connection or shared past that adds emotional depth, such as Eddie and his son Christopher (Gavin McHugh). The unique aspect of Buck and Bobby lies in the fact that viewers have been able to observe, episode by episode, how the strong bond between the team leader of the 118 and the former rookie became stronger.

Bobby frequently challenged Buck, expressing views that Buck strongly objected to, as he believed he knew what was best for the young man. In response, Buck subtly showed respect and fear towards Bobby, indicating his reliance on Bobby for guidance and his dread at the thought of losing him. The show doesn’t dwell on this dynamic or make it overtly clear, but viewers can still sense its importance in their relationship. This unspoken bond between them only grows stronger through what remains unstated.
The final scene between Bobby and Buck is heartbreakingly powerful. There’s no room for Bobby to express everything he yearns to in that moment. Shocked, Bobby might not be able to come up with profound words. Yet, they don’t need many words because their relationship was carefully developed over time, from their initial meeting to their poignant farewell. For fans who have followed 9-1-1 since the start, it hits just right, wrapping up their journey beautifully.
