At today’s Day Of The Devs Summer Game Fest Showcase, the collaborative effort between South African studio Nyamakop and Mooncat Games unveiled Relooted, an intriguing heist game in which a band of thieves attempt to restore valuable artifacts to the cultures that deeply respect them.
In Relooted, each mission consists of three distinct stages: Initially, players scout the museum to identify the desired artifact’s location. Subsequently, they devise a stealthy exit strategy within the building, navigating around guards and potential hazards. Lastly, they make the daring move to retrieve the artifact and successfully flee using the pre-planned escape route.
In an engaging turn of events, the items players aim to acquire in Relooted aren’t merely fictional creations conceived for the game. Rather, they are authentic artifacts, stored in Western museums at present. Each in-game item comes with a concise history detailing its origin, the culture from which it emerged, and why this artifact holds such significance and reverence within that specific cultural group.
In one of the Day Of The Devs segment presentations, there’s an artifact called the Ngadji Drum, which belongs to the Pokomo tribe from Africa and was found in the 1870s. This drum was taken by British colonizers at the turn of the 20th century and sent to a museum. After 114 years had passed, it was the Pokomo king’s brother who first laid eyes on the drum since its theft. He was able to see it in storage at the museum when he was brought there.
At the Day Of The Devs event, we saw first looks and updates for several forthcoming indie games, such as Big Walk by Untitled Goose Game creators House House, and mixtape by The Artful Escape developers Beethoven & Dinosaur. Additionally, they announced Snap And Grab, a retro ’80s heist game by No Goblin and Annapurna Interactive, along with fresh insights into Possessors from Heart Machine and Devolver Digital.
In simpler terms, it’s planned that the game “Relooted” will be launched for both the Xbox Series X|S consoles and personal computers (PC) through platforms like Steam and the Epic Games Store. The exact release date was not disclosed during the Day Of The Devs live broadcast.
