HBO’s series The Last of Us concluded its second season not too long ago. Showrunner and writer Craig Mazin has since commented on one of the significant events from Season 2, specifically the demise of a crucial character. Additionally, Mazin shared his thoughts as to why he feels the production team may have made mistakes in preparation for the upcoming third season.
Spoilers follow below.
In the second episode of Season 2, the character played by Pedro Pascal, Joel Miller, suffered a gruesome death at the hands of Abby (Kaitlyn Dever). This event stirred up intense feelings among viewers, much like when gamers encountered the demise of Joel in Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us: Part II.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: “When Abby took down Joel in The Last of Us Part II, everyone was flipping out, and some even asked, ‘Why did you off Pedro Pascal?’ But let me set the record straight – I didn’t take Pedro down! You can catch him in various roles across multiple productions, and it’s become a running joke that he’s everywhere!
Mazin continued to assert, ‘We didn’t take his life! He’s a person who is still breathing. He’s okay. And he’s present in every other aspect,” Mazin clarified.
Neil Druckmann commented, “People had intense responses to any contentious narrative choices we made during Season 2.”
During the interview, Mazin touched upon the difficulty of producing a second season for a TV series. In the first season, he noted that it’s quite an accomplishment just to release a show. For The Last of Us, the show was both critically acclaimed and highly rated, generating “immense anticipation” for Season 2, as Mazin put it.
He pointed out that after learning numerous lessons, there’s an expectation to adhere to them, which can be unfortunate because mistakes are no longer an option. Additionally, he mentioned the challenge of meeting audience expectations while still delivering something unexpected. Originally, the bar for video game adaptations was quite low, but now, they’ve set themselves up for scrutiny. Essentially, what they achieved in Season 1 was impressive, but now they may have overstepped boundaries.
The hit series “The Last of Us” is set to return for a third season, though the exact release date remains undisclosed at this time. It’s anticipated that a fourth season will follow, wrapping up the storylines.
