The psychological horror series based on Stephen King’s novel, titled “The Institute,” has recently been updated with some exciting news. Produced and directed by television veteran Jack Bender, known for his work on shows like “The Sopranos,” “From,” and “Mr. Mercedes,” this chilling series will debut this summer on MGM+. The premiere is scheduled for July 13, at 9 PM ET/PT.
As reported by Bloody Disgusting, The Institute stars Ben Barnes and Mary-Louise Parker, and it consists of eight episodes, although it’s not entirely clear if they will all be released on Jul. 13. The miniseries also stars Joe Freeman, Brendan Beiser, Simone Miller, Martin Roach, Julian Richings, and Hannah Galway. Per the official plot synopsis:
12-year-old prodigy Luke Ellis is abducted, finding himself at The Institute, a place filled with kids like him who arrived there similarly, all exhibiting extraordinary talents. Meanwhile, in a nearby town, retired law enforcement officer Tim Jamieson (Barnes) seeks tranquility, but his peaceful life will be disrupted as his path intertwines with Luke’s.
Benjamin Cavell, renowned for his work on shows like Justified, Homeland and the recent adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, is slated to pen and oversee the upcoming series. In a previous hint, he subtly linked the project to another King masterpiece, The Institute. This connection lies in the children attending the Institute, who possess a talent frequently found in the Stephen King cosmos: they have psychic abilities similar to those from King’s The Shining, specifically ‘the shine’, or telekinetic powers. Intriguingly, these children are being abducted by an enigmatic organization, and it seems they must rely on their unity, resourcefulness, and innate talents to escape without external intervention. Even Stephen King himself applauded the announcement of the release date for this intriguing project.
‘The Institute’ Is One of Several Stephen King Adaptations in 2025
2025 has finally brought us the anticipated film version of Stephen King’s short story, The Monkey. Directed by Osgood Perkins under the pseudonym Longlegs, The Monkey offers a thrilling and humorous horror ride that’s packed with wit and irony, making it one of the most unique King adaptations yet. This weekend, moviegoers can catch the latest King adaptation hitting the big screen. Adapted from its namesake novella, Mike Flanagan’s The Life of Chuck is shaping up to be another success for the dynamic duo of King and Flanagan, according to early critiques.
Following the release of “The Institute” in July, enthusiasts of the author are expected to rush to cinemas to witness the eagerly awaited film adaptation of “The Long Walk”. This dystopian tale is helmed by Francis Lawrence and features Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Mark Hamill, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, and Judy Greer in its cast.
In the latter part of this year, Edgar Wright’s movie “The Running Man” will hit the cinemas on the 7th. This action-packed film features Glen Powell, Josh Brolin, Lee Pace, Colman Domingo, and Jayme Lawson. As for Stephen King’s adaptations, only the release date for the prequel TV series “It: Welcome to Derry” has not been confirmed yet; it is expected to air on HBO around late 2025.
