Disney’s Hollywood Studios is set to bid farewell to a treasured attraction. The iconic 3D movie experience, MuppetVision 3D, which was masterfully crafted by Jim Henson, will close permanently on Saturday, June 7, 2025.

On its last day, Disney is extending the operation hours for fans who want to see the show once more. Instead of closing an hour before Disney’s Hollywood Studios usually does (at 9 p.m.), the show will continue running until the park officially closes at 10 p.m.

A Beloved Classic with Jim Henson’s Touch

Ever since its premiere in May 1991, MuppetVision 3D has been a must-see attraction for visitors, combining elements such as 3D movies, animatronics, live puppetry by the Muppets, and their trademark humor. This production, one of Henson’s last projects before his passing, serves as an enduring symbol of his innovative talent and fun-loving nature. The show’s mix of technology and puppetry has kept people entertained for years, with Kermit’s quick wit, Fozzie Bear’s jokes, and Gonzo’s antics being some of the most memorable highlights.

Even though visitors can catch the show until June 7th, it won’t be open for public attendance during the final performance on June 10th. Instead, Disney has arranged an exclusive goodbye performance on that day, only for its Cast Members.

Closing down MuppetVision 3D is part of a broader makeover for Grand Avenue, which is going to be changed into a land based on Pixar’s Monsters, Inc. Some people view this as evidence of Disney continuously updating its parks with fresh franchises and attractions. However, others criticize it as an erosion of Jim Henson’s legacy. Notably, MuppetVision 3D marked Henson’s final appearance as Kermit the Frog, and it was his last Muppet production before he passed away on May 16, 1990 at age 53.

The production also includes original Muppet performers such as Jerry Nelson and Richard Hunt, both of whom have since passed away. Legendary Muppeteer Frank Oz plays a significant role, along with Steve Whitmire, who was chosen by Henson to carry on as Kermit the Frog. However, neither Oz nor Whitmire are currently involved in Muppet productions.

Whitmire got let go by Disney, while Oz opted out of working on Muppet productions, stating that he had creative disagreements with Disney regarding the character usage.

Supporters of amusement parks and enthusiasts of fan culture have expressed their disappointment upon hearing the news. Many fondly recall MuppetVision 3D as a unique, cheerful adventure that offered a refreshing change from the park’s numerous high-tech thrill rides.
