In the future, AI could enable smaller developers to create games as expansive and captivating as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, according to the perspective shared by the leader of Epic Games, Tim Sweeney.
The debate over employing “innovative” artificial intelligence elicits intense feelings, including within the gaming sector, not always favorable ones. Fears about AI supplanting human roles and the potential misuse of imitative (or even allegedly stolen) content of subpar quality are juxtaposed with those who regard AI as yet another resource for game creators.
At the Unreal State event, where Witcher 4 technology was demonstrated, Tim Sweeney, CEO of Epic Games, expressed a positive outlook on AI prompts. He believes that AI will become an integral part of game engines and will pave the way for completely new types of games, which wouldn’t be feasible without artificial intelligence.
Big worlds of small developers
In a conversation with IGN, Sweeney pointed out that significant technological advancements in game development inevitably result in the emergence of new game genres. To illustrate his point, he cited 3D graphics as an instance, which birthed the genre of 3D shooter games, and increasingly powerful hardware capabilities enabling multiplayer battles with hundreds of players in battle royale games.
In discussions surrounding the initial excitement about creative artificial intelligence, the leader of EG often pointed to a popular application example: the ability to generate endless conversations with Non-Player Characters (NPCs). This feature is so user-friendly that even small teams find it straightforward to build immersive, interactive environments.
To create a game like “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” with AI characters managing dialogue, a team of 10 people might need access to advanced AI technologies that can handle complex dialogues and character interactions. This would require developing or integrating an AI system capable of understanding context, generating natural-sounding responses, and adapting to various game scenarios.
To achieve this, the team would focus on writing detailed character synopses, defining dialogue patterns, and setting up the AI’s learning process, allowing it to create unique and immersive conversations between characters. With the right tools and resources, such a project could become feasible within the next few years.
The tainted idea of AI
The leader of Epic Games expresses excitement about incorporating AI in game creation, an interest he’s held before. Yet, he acknowledges the challenges that currently come with this technology. Sweeney voiced concerns over companies who have compromised contemporary AI by exploitatively collecting content from other companies and people. Additionally, it’s worth noting that AI has recently begun to leverage its own creations, a development that may not be beneficial in the long run.
Despite these challenges, the American maintains an upbeat perspective. He believes that this situation offers small, independent teams an opportunity to develop large-scale games and simultaneously empowers AAA studios to expand and enhance game quality.
