It has been officially announced that another adaptation will debut in 2025. MGM+ recently revealed the initial glimpse and release date for their forthcoming television series based on Stephen King’s 2019 sci-fi horror novel, “The Institute.
According to reports, MGM+ has announced that The Institute, an eight-episode limited series based on Stephen King’s latest novel, will debut on July 13. This television adaptation was penned by Benjamin Cavell and directed by Jack Bender, who is renowned for his work on over 40 episodes of the popular series Lost. The Institute represents another King adaptation for both Cavell and Bender. The former developed the Paramount+’s The Stand miniseries, while the latter directed episodes of Under the Dome and Mr. Mercedes and was a producer on The Outsider. In addition to the premiere date, MGM+ has also shared several sneak peeks from the chilling series, which eager fans can check out below.
The narrative revolves around teen prodigy Luke Ellis, portrayed by Joe Freeman, who finds himself in an unfamiliar location populated by other children, all of whom arrived there in a similar manner and share extraordinary talents. This setting is known as The Institute, under the enigmatic leadership of Ms Sigsby (Mary-Louise Parker). In a tranquil town, ex-cop Tim Jamieson (Ben Barnes) seeks to begin anew, but his serene existence will be disrupted when his path crosses with Luke’s, as prophesied in the synopsis for this miniseries.
Hollywood Cannot Get Enough of Stephen King
In 2025, one of five film adaptations of Stephen King’s works will be “The Institute”, marking the first series based on one of his novels in four years since “Oz Perkins’ The Monkey” graced theaters with its critical and commercial success. Tomorrow, another King adaptation, titled “The Institute”, is scheduled for a limited theater release, with a wider nationwide rollout on June 13.
On July 13th, “The Institute” will mark its debut, making it the third Stephen King adaptation of 2025. Following in December with the fourth adaptation is “The Long Walk”, and November brings the fifth with “The Running Man”. The initial novel for “The Long Walk” was written by King under his Richard Bachman pen name in 1979. This novel, along with its upcoming film adaptation, is set in a dystopian future where 100 teenage boys compete in a grueling challenge that ends when only one boy remains. The cast includes several recognizable actors like Mark Hamill, Judy Greer, Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, Charlie Plummer, and Ben Wang, who was recently the lead in another production.
Speaking of “The Running Man,” it marks the second screen adaptation of Stephen King’s 1982 novel (originally published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman), following the first film of the same name. Glen Powell takes over the role previously played by Schwarzenegger as Ben Richards, a character who signs up for a lethal television game show called “The Running Man.” Over the course of 30 days, he must evade professional assassins in an attempt to win a substantial cash prize that could improve his family’s harsh living conditions. Known for his popular directorial work, Edgar Wright is at the helm of this adaptation, promising a truer representation of the original story compared to Schwarzenegger’s movie.
The Institute is set to premiere on MGM+ on July 13.
