Vertical Acquires Matt Tyrnauer’s ‘Nobu’ Documentary (EXCLUSIVE)

The company Vertical has obtained the distribution rights for the documentary “Nobu” in North America, prior to its premiere at the 2025 Tribeca Film Festival.

According to the memoir “Nobu: By Nobu Matsuhisa,” the movie depicting renowned chef and restaurateur Nobu Matsuhisa premiered at the 2024 Telluride Film Festival for the first time. The documentary was financed and produced by Stuart Ford’s AGC Studios.

In the documentary, Tyrnauer (“Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid,” “Where’s My Roy Cohn?”) delves into Matsuhisa’s culinary empire while tracing his journey from a troubled past as a child delinquent to his rise as an aspiring chef and ultimately the individual who revolutionized international cuisine.

According to Tyrnauer, Nobu is often considered the most accomplished chef in history due to his unique creation of Japanese cuisine and becoming universally recognized by just his first name. However, what I found while making this film is that his story is far more complex and emotionally powerful than many realize. It’s a tale steeped in family heartache and devastating business setbacks that paved the way for his extraordinary late-career triumph. His journey began in the punk-food movement of 1980s Los Angeles, eventually leading him to fame as a celebrity chef. Today, he heads a global empire that ranks among the most luxurious restaurant brands in the world.

Starting from June 27, ‘Nobu’ will have its exclusive premiere at the Angelika Film Center in New York. From July 4 onwards, it will be rolled out nationally.

Besides Matsuhisa, the documentary also includes conversations with renowned figures such as Wolfgang Puck, Robert De Niro, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Ruth Reichl, Cindy Crawford, and Rande Gerber.

According to Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey, “Matt is a remarkable documentary maker.” He finds it unsurprising that Matt’s portrayal of Nobu Matsuhisa’s life is both captivating and motivational. Here, we have two skilled professionals at the pinnacle of their careers, and Vertical Entertainment feels privileged to share this stunning film with the world.

The movie was created by a team consisting of Tyrnauer, Gianni Nunnari, Corey Reeser, Jeffrey Soros, Simon Horsman, Charlie Cohen, Andrea Lewis (who also took on the role of editor), and Graham High. Jenny Ewig served as the consulting producer, while Stuart Ford, Ally Gipps, Luke Rodgers, and Andrew Blau were the executive producers.

The agreement was worked out, with Jarowey and Rachel White (the Manager of Acquisitions & Sales) representing Vertical, and Anant Tamirisa standing in for AGC Studios.
