Prime Video Develops New Fantasy Series Based on Bestselling YA Book Trilogy

A fresh fantasy television series is under production at Amazon’s streaming service, Amazon Prime Video, inspired by a popular book series. Just a few weeks after Amazon declared the termination of its grandiose epic fantasy production, “The Wheel of Time,” the platform has another potential contender in development. With shows like “The Rings of Power” already part of Amazon’s expanding original TV collection and titles such as “Fourth Wing” and “God of War” rumored to be on the horizon, Amazon Prime Video is making efforts to preserve its reputation as a prime destination for fantasy television.

After the success of “Game of Thrones,” all streaming services have been eager to secure their own significant fantasy series. Although “The Wheel of Time” didn’t work out, the search for more never ends. The 21st century has demonstrated that fantasy is a thriving genre with new subgenres catering to diverse groups of readers. Amazon’s upcoming show seems poised to attract a novel segment of viewers within the realm of fantasy TV.

Amazon Prime Video Is Adapting Lauren Roberts’ Powerless

Powerless Is A Bestselling YA Fantasy/Romance Trilogy

Based on Deadline’s report, Amazon has acquired the Young Adult fantasy series “Powerless,” penned by Lauren Roberts. Unlike shows such as “The Rings of Power,” this trilogy is aimed at a younger demographic and could resonate more with series like “The Summer I Turned Pretty.” The romantic fantasy series, which gained popularity on TikTok, is being adapted for television by Daphne Ferraro, a writer known for her work on “Maxton Hall: The World Between Us” and the hit Netflix mystery sci-fi show, “Dark.” The studio handling the project is Olive Bridge Productions, known for productions like “Anyone But You” and “Peter Rabbit.

The story unfolds in a make-believe realm governed by the Elites, with our protagonist hailing from the lower class known as the Commons. Paedyn Gray is a resourceful thief whose father was brutally executed by the king. Her life takes an unexpected twist when she inadvertently rescues the prince. The narrative revolves around a significant occurrence named the “Purging Trials,” compelling Paedyn to participate. This series combines aspects of epic fantasy, romance, and dystopian elements, much like Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games series does.

Our Take On Prime Video’s Powerless

Powerless Sounds Like Fantasy Hunger Games

I found it disheartening that The Wheel of Time didn’t succeed on Amazon Prime. However, Powerless appears to have a stronger chance of success if handled effectively. Unfortunately, the romance genre has faced challenges in Hollywood, with shows like A Court of Thorns and Roses and Fourth Wing lingering in development for extended periods. If Prime manages to launch Powerless, it could open the door for a whole new subgenre of fantasy on television, mirroring the success of the Hunger Games films. It’s all about finding the right audience for this show.
