Recently, while browsing TikTok, you might have come across some videos showcasing an animal resembling a rabbit but sporting shark teeth; this creature is known as ‘Labubu.’
In essence, Labubu is a “fantasy creature” that made its debut in a collection of books for kids titled ‘The Monsters,’ which were penned and released by the artist Kasing Lung in 2015. The artist happens to be of Dutch-Hong Kong origin.
In contrast to numerous other monsters featured in the books, Labubu stands out with her toothy smile and bunny ears, captivating audiences globally, transforming into a modern equivalent of ‘Hello Kitty’ when it comes to beloved mascot figures.
In the decade that followed, Pop Mart, a popular Chinese merchandise retailer, seized control over the market for Labubu items. Today, you can find various iterations of this character as plush toys, keychains, and dolls being sold globally at numerous locations.

In the year 2019, they initiated the sale of Labubu vinyl figurines packed in mystery boxes, which subsequently gained immense popularity across the globe. This phenomenon has dominated social media platforms and resulted in long queues of enthusiastic followers outside Pop Mart outlets worldwide.
On the other hand, the popularity of Labubu figurines has skyrocketed to such an extent that certain buyers are even purchasing insurance for these dolls, worrying they might be swiped and sold online.
Labubu fans insure their figures as theft rises
According to the travel insurance company Passportcard, approximately one third of Millennials and Generation Z individuals have pondered over securing insurance for their Labubu items while venturing overseas.
Approximately one out of every four Australian tourists share this concern, as it’s been estimated that around 20% of all travelers feel they may be particularly at risk for theft while abroad.
Peter Klemt, the head of PassportCard Australia, pointed out in a statement that while it may appear unusual to insure a toy, it underscores just how deeply attached people can become to the items they carry around with them.
Given that some Labubus are being sold for around $652 USD on resale platforms, it’s understandable why they might feel the need to safeguard them.
Indeed, numerous enthusiasts of Labubu have shared instances where their plush toys were allegedly taken from them in public places. For example, TikTok user Sarah Mariesan claims that her toy was snatched from her bag during a shopping trip at The Grove, located in Los Angeles, California.
Two distinct individuals who are enthusiasts of Labubu and frequent world travelers confessed to The Daily Telegraph that they have purchased insurance policies for their smiling Labubu statues.
24-year-old Olivia Bubalao stated, “I’ve learned that numerous individuals have had their belongings stolen. After doing some investigation, I discovered an insurance plan that covered my Labubu among my valuable possessions, making the decision a clear one.
Rachael Clayton expressed that if she were to misplace an item from her Labubu collection during a trip, she’d be quite upset. This is because they are difficult to find nowadays and she purchased them some time ago – at this point, they seem like a part of herself.” (She took out a $98 insurance policy for her Labubu collection.)
As a gamer, I didn’t need to jet-set around the world for my Labubus collection to get swiped – a TikToker shared how a sneaky burglar raided their vehicle and made off with a row of plushies perched on the dashboard.
As a devoted admirer, I’d say that while Labubu may appear a bit playful or tricky at times, Pop Mart portrays her as genuinely kind-hearted with an earnest desire to assist. However, her good intentions frequently lead to unintended consequences.
As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but be swept up in the frenzy this game’s captivating aesthetics have ignited. It seems even global icons like K-Pop sensation Lisa from BLACKPINK, Rihanna, and pop powerhouse Dua Lipa are taking notice!
