Squid Game creator lost 10 teeth by the end of Season 3 and there’s a sad reason

The third season of Squid Game is almost upon us, leaving fans eagerly anticipating which characters may live or die. However, something that definitely won’t be returning is the missing smile of its creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk – his teeth are not part of this upcoming installment.

Ever since it was first introduced in 2021, the show Squid Game has achieved remarkable success on Netflix, largely due to its unique mix of incisive social critique, captivating plotlines, well-developed characters, and most notably, its imaginative challenges modeled after classic playground games.

Following the suspenseful Season 2 finale from last December, we’ll soon discover which characters are still involved in the game – among them Seong Gi-hun, also known as Player 456 (played by Lee Jung-jae), who remains unaware that Player 001 is actually Front Man (portrayed by Lee Byung-hun).

However, it’s interesting to note that although the competitors appear to be tested to the utmost on-screen, the tension off-camera has been equally demanding.

Hwang Dong-hyuk lost even more teeth making Squid Game Season 3

In a recent disclosure, the mastermind behind Squid Game, Hwang Dong-hyuk, shared that he’s unfortunately lost another pair of teeth while working on Season 3 – and it’s all attributed to high levels of stress.

After the launch of the initial chapter, I heard rumors that he’d actually shed around six teeth due to the intense pressure of trying to bring his vision to life as intended.

In November of the previous year, he mentioned that around eight to nine teeth had left his mouth. Regrettably, this issue resurfaced during the filming of Seasons 2 and 3, which were shot consecutively.

To Entertainment Weekly, Dong-hyuk expressed, “I believed it would be alright, but this time, I had to extract not just one, but two additional teeth. In Season 1, I extracted around eight teeth, and now I have two more out, which I haven’t replaced yet. So I’m currently waiting for them.

In simpler terms, the person responsible for the project elaborated that although Seasons 2 and 3 were less demanding because he had already planned the structure, it was still challenging – particularly since he was under pressure to complete the main series successfully.

He went on to say, ‘By now, my vision for the universe and space has become reality, making Seasons 2 and 3 less challenging than Season 1 since I had already brought it to life.’

However, a challenge presented itself during Seasons 2 and 3: We had to produce both the script and filming simultaneously. Essentially, it felt like creating a single season, with our primary goal being to release Season 3 as quickly as possible.

As a gamer, let me tell you, the project I’ve been working on was way bigger than I initially thought. We were in this marathon-like grind for nearly a year, which took quite a toll on my physical wellbeing. It wasn’t just about pushing buttons; it required endurance and determination.

Can stress cause teeth to fall out?

Regrettably, yes – it’s more subtle than a cartoon character jumping out in fright. Prolonged stress has been found to be associated with various dental problems, any one of which could potentially lead to tooth loss gradually.

Among other things, this encompasses behaviors such as tooth grinding (commonly referred to as bruxism), jaw clenching, periodontal diseases affecting the gums, and erosion of tooth enamel.

Or:

Bruxism (tooth grinding), jaw clenching, gum problems like periodontal disease, and weakened tooth enamel are some of the issues that fall under this category.

Or:

To put it simply, bruxism (grinding teeth), jaw clenching, gum diseases, and thinning tooth enamel are all part of the broader picture here.

In severe situations, excessive cortisol levels and inflammation might disrupt blood circulation in the gums, worsening the issue. Additionally, these conditions can intensify gum disease, leading to tooth loss as well.

Dong-hyuk isn’t the first famous figure to struggle with this problem; in 2017, Demi Moore disclosed that she lost her front teeth due to excessive grinding caused by stress. Here’s hoping that his smile will get a break now that Season 3 is coming out this month.
