According to James Gunn, the director of the upcoming DC Universe film, the running time of 129 minutes as shown on AMC Theatres is accurate.
In contrast to Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel” (143 minutes), Gunn’s upcoming DCU movie boasts a runtime longer than six previous Superman films: “Superman and the Mole Men” (58 minutes), “Superman IV: The Quest for Peace” (90 minutes), the extended cut of “Superman II” directed by Richard Donner (116 minutes), “Supergirl” (124 minutes), “Superman III” (125 minutes), and “Superman II” (127 minutes). However, even with this extended runtime, Gunn’s Superman falls short of the television cut of “Superman: The Movie” (an impressive 188 minutes) and “Superman Returns” (154 minutes), which remain the longest solo outings for the Man of Steel.
Fears arose among some fans that the shorter runtime for Superman was due to Warner Bros. forcing Gunn to create the first DC Universe film within a two-hour timeframe. However, Gunn quickly dispelled this notion, assuring a fan on social media that such claims were unfounded and beyond Warner Bros.’ control since it’s a DC Studios production. This suggests that Warner Bros. will have no influence over the final cut of DC’s movies, as the power lies with the directors and DC Studios.
Superman Looks to Have a Strong Box Office Start
Approaching the final two months before the release of “Superman” in cinemas, there’s still room for adjustments in the movie’s box office projections within the DCU. At this moment, predictions suggest a debut ranging from $154 million to $185 million. If “Superman” surpasses the lower bound of this estimate, it has a strong chance of overtaking the record for the highest opening weekend for a film based on a DC Comics character, surpassing the $166 million domestic debut of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”.
The blockbuster debut of Superman, estimated at over $150 million, is crucial for the film. It seems Warner Bros. won’t see any profit from the DCU movie, which reportedly cost $225 million to produce. However, a source reveals that for Superman to be considered successful both within the studio and in public opinion, it needs to generate approximately $700 million globally.
David Corenswet takes the lead role in Superman, playing the iconic Man of Steel. Alongside him are Rachel Brosnahan, who portrays Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult in the role of LexCorp CEO Lex Luthor. The cast also features several well-known characters from Superman, including Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Wendell Pierce as Perry White, Pruitt Taylor Vince as Jonathan Kent, and Neva Howell as Martha Kent.
In addition to the main character, the film will showcase several other superheroes such as Nathan Fillion portraying Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific. It’s been confirmed that the first two characters will make their appearance a month following the release of Superman.
Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11.
