Jennifer Lopez sparkles in the initial glimpses of director Bill Condon’s new film musical, “The Kiss of the Spider Woman.
In the movie, which adapts the stage musical by Terrence McNally, John Kander, and Fred Ebb, Lopez portrays Ingrid Luna, a glamorous film character known for her iconic role as a spider woman who can fatally kiss her partners. Set in 1981 amid Argentina’s Dirty War, an imprisoned gay hairdresser named Luis (Tonatiuh) escapes the harsh reality by visualizing Luna’s films. When Valentin (Diego Luna), a Marxist, is placed in his cell, they form an unusual friendship through their shared love for music and cinema.
The trailer features Jennifer Lopez singing one of the musical’s iconic songs, “Where You Are.” With a total of 13 songs, Lopez, Tonatiuh, and Luna each take turns performing them. Bill Condon, who directed “Dreamgirls,” penned the screenplay as well as oversaw the film production. Barry Josephson, Tom Kirdahy, and Greg Yolen serve as producers for this movie musical.
In his review for Sundance from EbMaster, critic Peter Debruge described Lopez’s performance as “smoldering.” He also mentioned that her acting might attract audiences who typically don’t appreciate musicals. However, he pointed out that it is the relatively inexperienced Tonatiuh who steals the show, demonstrating both strength and vulnerability in a character that appears less superficial with each scene that passes.
The film titled “Kiss of the Spider Woman” made its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January, and it’s scheduled for a cinematic release through Lionsgate on October 10th.
