Dorothy’s Bigger Role in Wicked: For Good Revealed

In the upcoming movie “Wicked: For Good”, it’s no surprise that Dorothy is set to play a somewhat expanded part compared to her appearance in the original film. At the start of the first “Wicked” film, which was highly praised upon its November 2024 release, we catch glimpses of Dorothy, Toto, The Tin Man, The Scarecrow, and The Cowardly Lion walking along the Yellow Brick Road from behind. However, Dorothy’s role in “Wicked” was mainly limited to this brief cameo as the story primarily focused on the bond between Elphaba and Glinda. Following the conclusion of “Wicked”, the sequel will delve into the intertwining events of “The Wizard of Oz”.

In the continuation of the story, titled “Wicked: For Good“, we can anticipate that the narrative will continue to explore Elphaba and Glinda’s journey through Oz’s political landscape and their friendship. However, Dorothy is set to take on a more significant role in this upcoming production. From the initial trailer for “Wicked: For Good“, it appears that we might finally get a glimpse of Dorothy’s appearance within the movie – an exciting departure from the musical version. So, let’s delve into what changes we can expect to see in Dorothy’s role and who might be chosen to portray her.

Dorothy’s Wicked: For Good Role Is A Change To The Musical

Dorothy Will Appear In Several Scenes In Wicked: For Good

In the stage production of “Wicked”, Dorothy isn’t visibly present but is symbolized by a silhouette of the well-known character. Originally portrayed by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie, this unseen Dorothy makes her most significant impact when she splashes water on Elphaba, who becomes the infamous Wicked Witch of the West during the storyline. However, based on the recently released trailer for the upcoming sequel “Wicked: For Good”, it appears that Dorothy might have more scenes in this new production.

In the initial teaser for “Wicked: For Good,” Dorothy is depicted in two distinct moments. In one instance, she’s strolling along the Yellow Brick Road accompanied by Toto and some unidentified Oz residents. Later in the trailer, Dorothy encounters her companions from “The Wizard of Oz” and they encounter the Wizard himself. At this point, the Wizard instructs Dorothy and her friends to retrieve the broom belonging to the Wicked Witch of the West, which links the film’s storyline to the original 1939 movie plot.

Wicked 2 Needs To Be Careful With Dorothy – And The Director Knows It

Dorothy Shouldn’t Be Featured That Much In Wicked: For Good

In the musical version of “Wicked,” Dorothy doesn’t interact with the Wizard, suggesting that the upcoming sequel, titled “Wicked: For Good,” is planning some substantial alterations. It might alternate between Dorothy’s escapades in the land of Oz and the continuing narrative centered around Elphaba, Glinda, and other characters. However, it’s crucial for “Wicked: For Good” to handle Dorothy’s involvement tactfully as her presence could potentially overshadow Elphaba and Glinda’s character development. Fortunately, the sequel’s director, Jon M. Chu, is aware of this, as he shared about Dorothy’s role in the sequel with “Vanity Fair.

The crossroads you see there is where we initially entered the world of Oz. We move cautiously, aiming to grasp its influence on our characters and the girls better than perhaps the series itself reveals. We’re fragile in our exploration. We’re fragile. We’re fragile.

From Chu’s remarks, it appears that Wicked: For Good may not heavily rely on Dorothy or unnecessarily feature her in many scenes. Given that the timeline of Wicked: For Good intertwines with that of The Wizard of Oz, it’s likely that we’ll encounter brief instances of Dorothy and other characters referencing her, but she probably won’t be a central figure in the movie. Fortunately, while there might be scenes where Dorothy’s face is shown in Wicked: For Good, this would differ significantly from the stageplay.

Dorothy’s Casting Isn’t Official – But One Actress Is Rumored

Who Will Take On Judy Garland’s Iconic Role In Wicked: For Good?

Given that Dorothy is set to encounter the Wizard in the play “Wicked: For Good”, it’s logical to assume her appearance would be featured. However, no official casting for the character in the upcoming “Wicked” films has been announced yet. There’s a strong buzz suggesting that Alisha Weir might portray Dorothy in these movies. Although Weir has responded to these rumors, she hasn’t confirmed whether she is indeed playing Dorothy. In an interview from February 2025, she hinted at the possibility by saying:

Upon seeing it, I exclaimed, “This is utterly amazing!” It was creating quite a buzz on social media, and everyone seemed to be asking me about it. As a huge Wicked fan, I had watched the original with my family, and given my admiration for John Chu’s work, Ariana Grande, and Cynthia, that would indeed be quite exciting.

We can highlight that Weir gained notoriety for portraying the main character in the 2024 horror film “Abigail” and leading the cast of “Matilda the Musical” in 2022. Given her past roles, she would make an excellent fit as Dorothy in “Wicked: For Good.” However, until it’s officially confirmed, another actress might be playing Dorothy in the upcoming “Wicked” films. Still, we’re eagerly awaiting to find out more about Dorothy when “Wicked: For Good” hits theaters on November 21, 2025.
