Java Films Acquires ‘Cuba & Alaska’ Ahead of Sheffield Doc Fest World Premiere, Releases First Look Trailer (EXCLUSIVE)

International documentary sales company Java Films, headquartered in Paris, France, has obtained global distribution rights (excluding Ukraine, France, Belgium, and Czech Republic for television) for director Yegor Troyanovsky’s feature documentary “Cuba & Alaska.” This move comes prior to the film’s world debut at Sheffield Doc Fest. A teaser trailer for the movie has been unveiled.

The movie, set to be shown at the Brussels International Film Festival during Directors’ Week Competition, presents an up-close and sometimes humorously grim portrayal of two Ukrainian female medics, “Cuba” (Yulia Sidorova) and “Alaska” (Olexandra). Filmed primarily using footage from their phones and GoPro cameras fixed to their helmets and chests, the film provides unique insight into the daily lives of these medics, showcasing their mutual dependence and a powerful demonstration of the bond necessary to endure in this environment.

The movie was created by Olha Bregman for 2Brave Productions based in Ukraine, Christian Popp for Tag Film from France, and Hanne Phlypo for Clin d’Oeil Films out of Belgium.

The team from Java Films, specifically Kathryn Bonnici and Donatien Pierda, instantly grasped our vision at CPH:Forum and their enthusiasm for the narrative has been awe-inspiring. For us, having a representative who genuinely understands the emotional aspect of this conflict is invaluable. We couldn’t hope for more suitable collaborators to help spread the tale of ‘Cuba & Alaska’ globally.

On Friday, the movie’s unique music collection – featuring tunes by modern Ukrainian musicians like Serhiy Zhadan, alongside an original soundtrack crafted by composer Frederik van de Moortel – will become available for streaming on Spotify.
