Koei Tecmo reveals Nioh 3 at State of Play, coming worldwide for PlayStation 5 and PC Steam in early 2026

At the June 2025 State of Play event, Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja unveiled Nioh 3. Following the broadcast, Koei Tecmo announced on their official website that this new history-themed dark fantasy action RPG will be playable not just on the PlayStation 5, but also on PC through Steam starting in early 2026. Additionally, they’ve made an alpha demo accessible only on PS5, which users can continue to access until June 18.

This fresh addition expands Koei Tecmo’s collection of contemporary action RPG series that feature a dark fantasy twist on historical narratives, characterized by challenging gameplay. Following the back-to-back releases of Nioh games set in Japanese history (in 2017 and 2020), the company delved into the Three Kingdoms era of China with Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty (in 2023). However, the announcement of Nioh 3 signals their return to Japan once more.

The trailer for the upcoming game suggests that its narrative unfolds during earlier times compared to Nioh 2, featuring the mighty daimyo Takeda Shingen at the height of his power. Additionally, it introduces a younger version of Tokugawa Ieyasu, who was then known as Takechiyo and had yet to forge relationships with his future retainer Honda Tadakatsu.

Excitedly, I can’t help but share a tidbit – Team Ninja had previously hinted at the much-anticipated launch of Ninja Gaiden 4 in 2025. But here’s an interesting twist: they’ve roped in PlatinumGames to assist with the project! This collaboration might have alleviated some internal workload, paving the way for potential progress on Nioh 3.

The reveal trailer for Nioh 3 is situated directly beneath it, and it comes in both English and Japanese dubbed versions.

Conquer the Crucible, Become Shogun

Overcome difficult challenges in an open field.

In this game, players are immersed in an expansive outdoor landscape, offering ample room for unrestricted discovery. Each “Nioh” installment carries a distinctive sense of tension that adds to the experience. Players will encounter formidable battles against powerful yokai, investigate villages where shady characters abound, tackle the demanding tasks of The Crucible, and engage with the challenging, hostile new settings as they strive to endure in the haunted realm!

Two Styles: Samurai and Ninja

In this fashion, gameplay is reminiscent of past “Nioh” installments. Innovative features like “Arts Proficiency,” boosting martial arts prowess, and “Deflect,” enabling players to parry enemy attacks just in time, have been incorporated, resulting in a string of thrilling, high-stakes encounters.

In the Ninja Style, you’ll shine with swift maneuvers such as dodging and high-flying moves, allowing you to strike from beyond your opponents’ reach by employing different Ninjutsu methods based on the battlefield conditions. You can employ skills like “Mist” that leaves a decoy after an attack, and “Evade” for skillfully dodging enemy attacks. These abilities enable you to outsmart opponents while launching fast, powerful strikes from behind.

In the new version, players can collaborate and offer aid to one another using the “Summon Visitor” function, or venture into the open world jointly via the online multiplayer mode called “Expeditions”. This interactive feature was a hit in past installments of the “Nioh” series. It’s particularly useful for players who find themselves stuck while playing alone, or for those who prefer to conquer challenges as a team.
