Rick and Morty’s Voice Actors Reveal Surprising Recording Secrets

The eighth season of “Rick and Morty” is going strong, and I’ve made it clear that this series should keep running for as long as possible. It’s hard to believe there was a time when fans feared the show might end after Justin Roiland was let go, and the roles of the main characters had to be recast by the series’ co-creator. However, Harry Belden and Ian Cardoni rose magnificently to the occasion, and they left me amazed when they revealed some fascinating tidbits about working on the show.

In an attempt to mimic Roiland’s portrayal of Rick and Morty, the voice actors strive for a similar sound. Yet, there are aspects of Roiland’s performance that are difficult to replicate, as he was renowned for his improvisation skills, effortlessly blending it into dialogues between his characters. During my interview with Harry Belden and Ian Cardoni (for TopMob), Cardoni highlighted the constraints on their ability to use improv in their voice-acting work.

In our performances, the scripts we receive have been refined through numerous revisions by the writers. They do an incredible job crafting the content, often incorporating improvisational elements into the script itself. However, in season 8 and beyond, I’ve had some leeway to adjust certain details like where burps or specific expressions are placed. The real creativity lies in how we deliver the lines, discovering the motivation behind the words, while the writers provide the foundation for our performances. It would be overconfident of me to believe that I could create something as polished and well-thought-out as what the writers produce after their rigorous editing process. But, there are moments where we infuse our own personality and unique take on the characters, which adds a touch of improvisation and keeps the tone lively.

Justin Roiland was indeed involved in the writers’ room for Rick and Morty, but Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden were not. Consequently, they didn’t contribute to scripting some of the show’s standout episodes. However, they maintain a role in influencing the creative choices during the voice-over process.

Ian Cardoni, who ended up securing the job over another popular voice actor, provided further clarification that left me quite surprised. It turned out that the “improvisation” I assumed I was listening to was actually part of the scripted dialogue. Moreover, both actors record their lines independently from separate locations.

100% in agreement with Ian’s point. Just as he mentioned, our creative process isn’t about recording together. Instead, it seems many people imagine us bouncing ideas off each other, which I find delightful because it suggests we’re hitting the mark. The show’s success is evident, and yes, the artistic liberty lies in the delivery, particularly Morty’s stammers. Sometimes I believe I can predict when Morty will stammer or not, but there’s always an exciting element of surprise when we decide to introduce a dramatic stammer here and there, leading to some fascinating outcomes.

It’s astonishing to me that Rick and Morty, voiced by Harry Belden and Ian Cardoni respectively, display such fantastic chemistry despite never actually being in the same room. However, it’s been reported that they struck up a close friendship after meeting, which could contribute to their convincing on-screen relationship. Alternatively, a more organic connection might be if Cardoni’s character was Morty’s terrible grandfather instead of Belden’s, but I find their simple friendship more appealing.

Dan Harmon Explained What Rick And Morty’s South Park Rule Is And Why They Always Use It

The connection between the two stars is particularly strong in Season 8 of “Rick and Morty”. Unfortunately, this season won’t become available for those with Max subscriptions until September. However, the first two episodes that have already aired on Adult Swim have convincingly demonstrated that these characters are the ideal ones to guide the series through future seasons, which appears to be the current plan.

In summary, Dan Harmon informed TopMob that there are currently no plans to conclude the “Rick and Morty” series. Given its popularity, it seems likely that the show will continue for many years, potentially surpassing other long-running animated programs. The early episodes of season 8 suggest it’s on track to achieve this milestone. Here’s hoping my enthusiasm remains by the end of the season and that the collaboration between Harry Belden and Ian Cardoni continues to grow even stronger.

Watch the latest episodes of “Rick and Morty” every Sunday at 11:00 p.m. ET on Adult Swim as part of their 2025 TV lineup. I’m eagerly anticipating more family escapades and how these episodes might shape Seasons 9 and 10!
